Birthplace Proof Argument

England Furbee Family

The below was written regarding Benjamin Furbee I, but it also applies to other members of the family during this time period.

"I have seen the birthplace and other events for Benjamin listed as Northwest, England, North West, England and also as NorthW, England. North West England is one of nine official regions within England, these regions are the highest tier of governmental subnational divisions used in England. The administrative counties in the North West are Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Merseyside.

The first programs we had for genealogical works were very limited in the number of characters that were allowed in the description fields. This technological limitation could be the very simple reason why the name has been listed as NorthW, North West or Northwest, England to represent the Northwest government office regions. There simply was not enough room to also list the descriptor administration region, government office region, or so on.

The second strongest argument as to where he was born would be that he was born in North Walsham, Norfolk, England where his parents were married. This would explain entries listed as NorthW, England but not those listed as Northwest, England. Even in this case, I would have hoped that listing if NorthW, Norfolk, Eng would have been discovered in great number.

The final geographical regions I have seen listed, and those that I consider to be the least likely are Durham, Northumberland, or Yorkshire. The only time I have seen this stated was when Northwest was removed from the birth entry on Family Search in an attempt to Standardize the place name field. Removing the word Northwest I believe is considered genealogically correct. The reason for the change stating that one of these places is probably his birthplace I do not subscribe to. These places are not the most northern, nor the most western in England.

To this end, I would say we can not fully discount any art of England for purposes of genealogical research until we find more primary sources and or negative proof. Personally, I will only be looking in North West, England compromising Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Merseyside, and in North Walsham, Norfolk, England."
