My family is from Wild Wonderful West Virginia and was paramount to the establishment of the states of West Virginia and Maryland and The Methodist Church in the United States. We hailed from Ireland, Scotland, England and Germany. Our surnames are Anderson, Bier, Burgess, Caldwell, Cavalier, Chapline, Crossland, Darrah, Furbee, Jackson, Landon, Moore, Myers, Sapp, Shuman, Triplett, Willey and Yoho.

My husband's family hails from Tennessee and you cannot look at the past of Sevier, Tennessee without running into them. They are of British, Cherokee, German, Scottish and other ancestries. Surnames include Bohannon, Brewer, Byrd, Dickson, Emert, Goodnite, Hancock, Howard, King, Marshall, McMahan, Randolph, Rainwater, Runyon, Ruthven, Webb, Wolfe and Trotter.

Genealogy is not just our heritage, it is our legacy. Therefore, I want this to be the legacy I leave behind for my children and theirs. I invite you to join me on this journey through time.

We are the chosen. In each family there is one called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. Genealogy is not a cold gathering of acts but is breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes.

Those who have gone before cry out: Tell Our Story. So, we do. In finding them, we find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before and cried? How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt there was love there for me? I have lost count.

It goes beyond documentation. It is who I am and why I do the things I do. They are bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh. It is an immense understanding that they were doing it for us. With love, caring and scribing each fact, we know we are them and they are us.

As a scribe called, I tell the family story. It is up to one in the future to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy.
