28 | "According to the 1940 Census Maude did not have a Social Security Number. Maude was the one who provided the family information to the Census Taker and was listed on line 29, so was chosen for Supplementary Questions found at the bottom of he Census Sheet. She completed two years of college at that time. She is listed as Haynes, Maude S. and I believe she may have listed S. for her maiden name. Maude was so very proud of her heritage. That is why one of her sons carries her maiden name as his given name." Kellie Sue Sapp King | Shuman, Maude E. (I13057)

37 | "Anna Sipple was a remarkable woman. During her lifetime, she introduced into the Furbee family an element of culture and an appreciation of the better things of life, such as it has seldom enjoyed since her day. Born to a life of wealth, luxury, and ease, she inspired in her husband and children sentiments which can be traced down to the present day. Anna Sipple Furbee, survived him [Bowers] almost five years. In her will, a most remarkable document, made November 14, 1785, she speaks of herself as 'being on sick bed, but of sound and perfect understanding.' It closes with this: 'Item, (I) will also that all my negroes may and shall be their own free people to act and deal for themselves.' This will was probated on or about December 20, 1785, which marks approximately the date of her death." | SIPPLE, ANNA (I11140)

38 | "As a child I was often confused about my Grandmother Maxines family. I knew she did not have any full blodded brothers or sisters. I also knew she often spoke of not meeting some of her siblings until she was an adult. One thing that I got most corrected on was that Mailda was her mother. Malinda was not the biological mothet of Maxine but she was her mom. The family said she was her mother, I believe this was so becouse the title mother carried a large level of respect. She raised Maxine as her own daughter. Mailnda was the woman that my father called grandma when he would be telling me stories fondly remembering her and her home made egg noodles. And oh would Dad get on me if I dared to call anyone but Malinda his grandma. I am sorry I that I do not really remember her that I mostly remeber the funeral services and the outpour of grief showed at her passing. She sounded like a very special woman, supporting Maxine later in life as she went to stay with the McIntyre so that she could meet her brother Kenneth and later her other half siblings mothered by Katherine Jane Yoho. Maxine was even listed as a biological daughter in Malinda's obituary. The obituary lists Malinda as having three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. These numbers include both biological and step grandchildren and great grandchildren. The best words I can think of to summarize her character would be gracious and loving. Bryan and Katherine were never married. I do not want anyone who reads this to think that my branch of the family has any ill at all to Katherine Jane Yoho. That is not at all the case. There is just a special bond that comes between a woman and the child she raises and loves. On the contrary, I have never really heard a bad thing about Katherine and I imagine she must have had as much love in her heart as Malinda had. She loved Grandma Maxine so much that she let Bryan raise her, knowing that in that action she was giving her daughter something she could not give at that time of her life. A home. If I remember the story correctly there was a point when my father, as a young man, had managed to break one or both of his legs and he went to the Pruitt's to recover. (You can find the Pruitts by going to one of the spouses of Katherine Yoho.) The 1940 Census states that Malinda finished fourth grade." Kellie Sue Sapp King | Darrah, Malinda Virginia (I900)

43 | "Before Kinsey and Lizze were married she was found to have Tuberculosis (TB). She was forthright with him and he took his marriage vows to her with an awesome sense of 'In sickness and in health' and a bittersweet feeling must have been there when they heard 'Until death us part'. To him it must have only be an existence without her and he wanted every moment of their life to count. His family were very upset about the marriage. The Shumans had nothing against her personally, it was the TB, and it scared them. There was a happy reprieve that ended in tragedy when they had a son who died in infancy of TB. Kinsey followed soon after their son and Lizze soon after of TB and a broken heart. The Shumans were understandably very upset that all three had died of Tuberculosis and Lizzie was viewed as a murderess by the family. As she was the one who did this they were not welcome to be laid to rest with the rest of the family. I do not know if the family ever regretted that choice but I do know I admire the courageous choice the couple made."
