On 10 AUG 1724 Waitman bought 300 acres on Murderkill Creek from Daniel Needham for 30 pounds. [2] On 11 AUG 1749 Waitman and wife Mary sold to John Hunn, for 30 pounds, their rights in two tracts that Mary inherited from her father, Nathaniel Hunn, who died intestate. Nathaniel had bought the 170-acre tract called "Town Point," on the north side of St. Jones Creek, from Isaac Hill. He had bought the 65-acre tract, which adjoined "Town Point," from George Newell. [5] Waitman made his will 27 JAN 1762; it was proved 11 FEB 1762. In it he mentioned wife Mary; sons Waitman, Jonathan, and Elijah; daughters Anna Furbee, and Meriam Barrett; son Caleb's children; land in Mispillion Hd. and at Marsh Hope. Executors were his sons Waitman and Jonathan; witnesses were Daniel Robisson, Silvester Tomson, and Henry Whitacur. [3], [6]

On 17 JUN 1682 Waitman was deeded a cow by his grandfather Christopher Calvert. Witnesses were George Porter and Will Stevens. [12] On 30 SEP 1717 Waitman received a warrant for 200 acres in Kent Co. from the Proprietaries of the Province of PA, in which he is identified as a gentleman and as the son of Garrett. [13] In 1742 Waitman and Lydia transferred to George Hart Jr. a parcel of land from a tract called "Pipe Elms." [14] On 12 FEB 1749 a tract formerly belonging to Joseph Miller, deceased, was conveyed to Waitman Sipple Sr. by Thomas Parke, high sheriff. [15] On 1 MAR 1770 Waitman, gentleman of Murderkill Hd., sold to Richard Darden of Talbot Co., MD, for 116 pounds, a tract of 319-1/2 acres called "Sipple's Advantage" on the main branch of Choptank River, known as Tappahannock Marsh.; the land had been surveyed for Waitman on 17 SEP 1760. He appointed his son Garret as his attorney for this transaction. [16] Waitman's death was reported in The Pennsylvania Gazette on 7 MAY 1772: "This venerable gentleman had reputably filled the different characters of master, neighbor, father and husband...had acquired plentiful fortune...which he shared with the poor....His virtues were manifold, and secured the esteem of all who knew him. Garrett was the first Sipple to settle in DE and came there from Accomack Co., VA. Between 1675 and 1677 he and Mary sold a total of 300 acres in Accomack Co. along the south branch, east of the town of Scarburgh (now Onancock), to Thomas Fowkes. [24] In 1680 they sold 100 acres to Robert Hutson. [25] On 19 MAR 1682 Garrett bought land in Somerset Co., MD, and sold it in 1694. [27] On 20 FEB 1677 a judgment was entered in Accomack Co. against Garrett for 350 pounds of tobacco when he failed to appear. On 17 SEP 1691 he was named in another court case there. [28]

Various depositions suggest birthdates of 1600 to 1617. [31] Christopher came to the Eastern Shore of VA about 1635. He settled in Accomack Co. before 24 JUN 1636, when William Bibby was granted 300 acres for the transportation of six people, including Christopher Calvert. [30] On 13 FEB 1637 Christopher witnessed (by mark) a sale by Philip Dodsworth of two cows in Northampton Co., VA. [32] On 25 SEP 1637 Christopher verified the will of William Bibby, deceased. [33] On 31 MAR 1651 Christopher and Samuel Calvert were among those promising allegiance to the Commonwealth of England "as is now established without King or House of Lords." [30] On 2 OCT 1655 Christopher received a land grant of 800 acres in Northampton Co. for the transportation of 16 people into the colony. It was a neck of land on the south side of the main southern branch of Anancock, bounded on the west by a branch parting it from the lands of John Jenkins and on the east by another branch parting it from the land of William Mellings. [35] On 20 OCT 1661 Christopher received a grant of 700 acres in Northampton Co. on Pungotege Creek, previously owned by Thomas Teackle and before him by Sampson Robins. [36] On 13 FEB 1668 Christopher (signed X) of Accomack Co. appointed William Mellings of Northampton Co. his attorney in a suit against John Dikes for 1500 pounds of "tobacco & caske" due Calvert for a year's service by his son Christopher Jr. [37] On 1 MAR 1668 Christopher won a judgment against Dikes for the 1500 pounds of tobacco and caske and costs. In 1680 Elinor and her daughter were witnesses in an Accomack Co. coroner’s inquest in a case of infanticide. A prevalent belief in 17th century England and Scotland was that a murderer touching or coming into the presence of a victim’s body would cause the wounds to bleed again. In this case, a male child was born to Mary, d/o Sarah Carter, w/o Paul, who is called Mary’s father-in-law [i.e., stepfather]. Mary said she was forced to have sex once with James Tuck and had sex with Paul Carter many times. Sarah and Paul secretly buried the child, who they said had died during the night. Mary (X) Sipple and Elener S. Calvert were among 12 women who watched as Sarah, and then Paul, touched the child’s body. Paul’s touch caused it to begin bleeding; he turned pale and the observers thought there was bruising at the child’s throat. Date of this examination was 1 MAR 1679. All three Carters--Mary, Sarah, Paul--were indicted, to be held for trial in James City. [41]
