  John T. Debolt is the biological son of Benjamin DeBolt and Dorcas (Wood) DeBolt. Dorcas died giving birth to her son John. Soon after he begins appear on Census records in the household of William and Sarah (Furbee) Shuman. As of yet I have found no court records of William and Sarah (Furbee) Shuman ofically adopting John. His surname appears at times as Debolt and others as Shuman. He is listed in two Census records as son of William, once with the surname Shuman and once with the surname Debolt. At they very least we do know that he was considered family by the Shumans and inherited Shuman Family land. Why this branch of the family took John in is unknown but we do know his mother died giving birth to him, his father remained alive for 35 years after Johns birth and that he had older siblings who were married. Yet he did not live with them after the passing of his mother. That having been said they were family, just not the most immediate family. John's adopted mother was the sister of Samuel Furbee, the children of Waitman Furbee and Catherine (Leap) Furbee. Samueal married Jane Postlethwait, and then married Almeda Cox DeBolt in 1884.Almeda was the same DeBolt kin. Solomon Furbee, the son of Samuel Furbee and Jane (Postlewhait) Furbee married Margaret Debolt, whom he and his wife had fostered, the sister oh John T. Debolt. This not only shows that there is a commonality between the Furbee and Debolt families but that John was not the first child that had been given into the care of the Furbee family and their kin. I have not yet found any reasons for John's siblings to have been fostered. I have no documention on his death at this time, but it is known John did marry and has descendants."
