Notes - Mrs. Catherine Maxwell
With deep regret the Herald-Patriot chronicles the passing away of one of Chariton's oldest and most highly respected ladies, Mrs. Catherine Maxwell, which ocurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe H. Curtis, on Sunday evening, August 4th, 1918, at the advanced age of 91 years, 11 months and 11 days. She had been in ill health for many months, suffering with the infirmities of age, and her death was not unexpected. Funeral services, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Jos. W. Goodsel, were held at the Curtis home on Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock, after which the remains were gently laid to rest in the Waynick cemetery. southwest of this city.
Catherine S. Clover was born in Pennsylvania, August 4, 1825. She was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Clover, being the last surviving member of a family of six. In 1845 she came with her parents to Iowa, locating at Fairfield. On December 25, 1851 she was married to John C. Maxwell. They moved to Lucas county in 1860, being among the early settlers of this county, residing here continuously until his death in March, 1894. Since that time she has made her home with her children, eighteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Her children present were William E., of Oakland; Chas. G., of Indianola, and Thos. H., and Mrs. Emily Curtis, of Chariton(Iowa). Those who were unable to be present were Albert A., of Los Angeles, Cal., and Monroe, of Nashville, Tenn.
She has been a member of the M. E. church for many years and has lived a good life, worthy of emulation. Her desire always was doing for others, and even in her last days before her sickness, she took an active interest in Red Cross work, having knitted this last winter, five sweaters, seven scarfs and several smaller articles.
In this hour of sorrow the bereaved relatives will have the sympathy of the entire community.
