    "Abner Mundell, grandfather of Samuel M. Hatfield, fought in the closing
    conf licts of the Revolutionary war." Hardedty's
    See article in "1776 - A Time to Remember" by Dorothy T. Hennen. In it
    Abner states that he was drafted f or two months in the Spring of 1781 in
    Captain William Crawford,s Company of the Pennsylvania Milita and was
    marched from Greene County (then Washington) to a fort on Tenmile Creek
    where he served his entire two months. This servi ce wa to protect the
    frontier inhabitants against the Indians. He also volun teered in 1779
    for a compaign to go against the Indians on the Allegheny and Ohio and
    was marched from Greene County to Fort McIntosh at the mouth of Beav er on
    the Ohio at which place he served two months bur was prevented from goi ng
    on the campaign since other troops did not arrive. This service was
    per formed in Captain John Huston's Company and was attached to Colonel
    Broadhead s or Colonel Crawford's Regiment. In 1778 he volunteered in
    Captain William Crawford's Company of Pennsylvania Milita for two months
    for the purpose of g oing to Wheeling to bring up some cargo boats (called
    Battauxs) from that pla ce to Pittsburg for the purpose of transporting
    the troops of General Clark t o the Wabash River on a compaign against the
    Indians. The service was perfor med. In 1778 Abner volunteered for two
    months in Captain Crawford's Company to quell the Torries in Greene,
    Fayette and Washington Counties. They cought upwards of 100 Torries and
    lodged them in the Jails of those counyies. He s ervied a total of eight
    months.
    He also stated that he was born in New Castl e, Delaware in 1756. Abner
    was granted a pension for eight months service; t he amount was $26.66 per
    annum, to commence March 4, 1834. Abner was the son of James and
    Margaret (Garret) Mundell.
    Abner Mundell married Mary Barnhill on April 9, 1782. He was born on
    April 27, 1758 and died May 8, 1845. Mary was born April 17, 1764 and
    died May 30, 1845. Both are buried in the Goshe n Baptist Church
    Cemetery, Garards Fort, PA. They were the parents of Margar et Morris,
    Jane Baily, Mary Lantz, John, James, Rebecca Hatfield, Nancy Cox, Samuel,
    Eleanor, Abner, Priscilla Tribby, Hugh and Joseph.
    They lived south at the foot of Turkey Knob and are buried in the old
    Goshen Baptist Churce Ce metery, Garards Fort, PA. Abner was originally
    buried in a family cemetery n ear Willow Tree, Greene Co, PA but the
    graves were moved when the farm was so ld.

    Not named in his father's will. Born April 27, 1758 and baptised at
    Goshen Baptist Church , October 13, 1786 with Andrew Mundell.
    His wife, Mary Barnhill was born April 17, 1764 and is mentioned in the
    will of Abner Mundell. This will, made May 23, 1837, was probated May
    13, 1845. (Will Book 2 pp 213)
    From The Tenmile Country and Its Pioneer Families
    Was a piller of the church and was appointed "Singing Clerk" at both the
    Whiteley and Muddy Creek houses on October 15, 17 90. In 1791 and again
    in 1795 he served his church as a messenger at the ass ociation meetings
    and in 1798 he was delegated to write the letter to the ass ociation
    meeting. In 1792 he provided wine for communion.
    In the 1820 censu s he is listed as being engaged in manufacturing. In
    the tax list of 1822 he is listed as a wheelright.
    The 1798 Direct Tax List showed Abner owning and o ccupying a house 28 x
    18" (valued at $80.00); also on his tract of 106 acres were a shop 20 x
    18' and a barn 18 x 18' (total value $554.00).

    James and Margaret (Garret) Mundell, who were received as members of the Gosh en Batist Church, at Garards Fort, Pennsylvania on January 26, 1776.
    In addi tion to Abner, they were the parents of James, John, Jonathan, Margaret Hart, Eleanor, Eli, Levi, Joseph and Andrew.

    James Mundell was brought to America at age 15 by his father, Jame s Mundell. The son became an apprentice to a cask maker or cooper. James finished his apprenticeship at age 21. He was offered a horse, saddle, and a suit of clothes, or the sum of $100.00 and his craftsman papers, as
    was the custom. He took the latter, and later went to Chester, PA where he joined a group of young men going west. They hit the Monogahela River, near Pittsburg and came up that river to the south of Little Whitely Creek, He staked one s quare mile or nearly 600 acres on the west
    side of the river in the vicinity of Whitely Creek, Ceylon, and Turkey Knob in Monongahela Township, Green County, Pennsylvania and named it "Mundell's Choice. His family cemetery is on a high hill ove rlooking the river and
    Ceylon.
    James and Margaret lived in Delaware for seve ral years following their marriage. On Feb.13, 1753 James bought land from h is father-inlaw in Christiana and Mill Creek Hundreds, New Castle Co., DE (De ed Book x3:611).
    In August 1764James was baptised and received into membership of the Brandywine Baptist Church near Chadd's Ford.
    On April 8, 1765 James sold his land in Newcastle Co. DE to William Cloud.
    On August 4, 1769 James an d Margaret were received into membership in the Welsh Tract Baptist Church at Oencader Hundred, New Castle Co., DE. On January 26, 1776 James and Margare t were received into membership of the Goshen Baptist Church (Washington Co., PA) by letter of transfer.
    On January 19,1 785 he warrented a tract of land f or Mundell's Choice and on March 1, 1790 he was granted apatent for this land .
    James Mundell told Colonel Crawford that a plot existed to kill Col. Crawf ord, Col. John Minor and Rev. John Corbly since they were reconized leaders o f the Whig Party. Later James Mundell to Col. Crawford'f fort and told him t hat a large force of Tories were Collecting. The DAR has
    accepted the papers of James Mundell as a patriot for his part in quelling the Tory uprising in PA.
    From The Mundell (Mundle) Family by Ruth Mundell Barry 1968 All the sett lers in the Tenmile Country are descendents of James and Margaret. Mundell's Choice wasnear the forks of Little Whitely Creek near Ceylon. The land was warranted to him on January 19, 1785. The
    land was near Aaron Jenkin's Fort and the Mundells do not seem to have suffered from Indians like some of their neighbors.
