Presley lived near McElroy in Tyler Co. "The home of the Furbees became one of the stations of an underground railroad--running from the North to the Southland. The house was watched repeatedly, by the Union forces and not without reason, for it often sheltered those who did not have the Union's interest at heart. One night Presley set out with a number of Confederate soldiers, who had been staying at his father's house to guide them on the last important turn of the road, near the mouth of Flint Run, and he was saying goodbye to the soldiers when, suddenly, men appeared from behind every tree and stone and swarmed down upon them. The band was taken first West Union and, later, to the Federal prison, Camp Chase, located near Columbus, Ohio. Presley was set at liberty several months later but not until after he had taken the oath of allegiance."

The History of West Virginia, Old and New
Published 1923, The American Historical Society, Inc.,
Chicago and New York, Volume II, pg. 125

Russell L. Furbee, who was in the Navy during the World war, is a member
of a prominent Marion County family, and has already gained recognition as a
lawyer practicing at Fairmont.
His home is at Mannington, where he was born January 15, 1898, son of
Howard R. and Sarah Jane (Atha) Furbee. His mother was born at Mannington,
November 12,1867. The grandfather of the Fairmont lawyer was Senator James F. Furbee, a native of Marion County, who was elected as a republican and served one term in the West Virginia State Senate. Senator Furbee was born at
Mannington, February 28,1866, and in early life was a lumberman, later an oil
operator, and in 1904 was elected sheriff of Marion County. Just before the
close of his four year term in that office he was chosen to the House of
Delegates by being elected as a republican, and was reelected. At the close
of his second term he retired from public affairs to devote all his time to
his oil business, and so continued until his death on December 23, 1919. He
was an active member of the Elks, Knights of Pythias, Moose, Modern Woodmen, and Woodmen of the World.
Russell L. Furbee acquired a public school education at Fairmont and
Mannington, graduating from the Mannington High School in 1914. For seven
years he was a student in the University of West Virginia, and completed both
the classical and law courses, receiving his A. B. degree in 1918 and his law
degree in 1921. Mr. Furbee was an able student and took a prominent part in
student affairs, being a member of the fraternities, literary societies, and
doing his part in athletics. In April, 1918, he left the university to enlist
in the navy, and was in training at Norfolk, Virginia, for four months. He
was then transferred to the Naval Aviation Ground School at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Boston, where he remained until December 21, 1918,
being honorably discharged with the rating of chief quartermaster.
In June, 1921, Mr. Furbee was admitted to the bar in Marion County, and
soon afterward opened his office at Fairmont. He is a member of the Marion
County, Monongahela Valley and West Virginia State Bar associations. He is a
Mason and Elk and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. [Submitted by Patty Tyler, , March 2000]

Lyle Corder says Anna died 1833 in Monongalia Co., but an Ann Davis, widow of John, married George Smith 14 JAN 1842 in Monongalia, surety Thomas Lazzell. In 1803 George Smith had bought from a John and Anna Davis land adjoining Jesse Martin, whose land was "on the river, near Laurel Run," deed witnessed by Caleb Furbee, Barney Haney, and Robert Davis; these people all lived near John Davis and Anna Furbee. Also, John and Anna Davis were still selling land in 1835.

According to Madison Stathers, "One more tragic event was to fall upon the Furbees during this period of universal tragedy, and it was to take the nature of a calamity for the entire community. Susan, the oldest daughter of Bowers and Nancy Furbee, had been married to Oliver P. Wells, a son of William Wells, one of the wealthiest and best known men of the county. They lived in the larger, stone house near the mouth of McElroy and had extensive holdings in the community. Oliver Wells returned from a trip to Baltimore and fell ill. His malady was diagnosed as the dread smallpox. Immediately, the farm--with all its occupants--was quarantined. The master of the house died after a few days of intense suffering and was buried by a few devoted followers. One by one all the members the household took the terrible malady, except the mother, who--by the greatest good fortune--had been vaccinated and escaped it completely. This scourge continued throughout the Spring and a part of the Summer of 1864."

On 15 JUN 1802 Waitman and Margaret sold 100 acres in Monongalia Co., VA, to Nathan and Margaret Joseph for $1.
On 18 SEP 1804, Waitman was summoned to District Court to answer Nathan Joseph in a plea of covenant broken and $500 damage.
In JAN 1812 Waitman sold his home to Enoch Evans. Waitman made his will 24 AUG 1827 and signed it "Wateman Furbee"; it was proved during MAY term 1835. In it he mentioned his son Bowers and daughter Margaret Joseph; the latter "hath received all that ever I intend for her of my Estate." His executor was his "son and friend" Bowers Furbee; witnesses were William and John Wells.

5039 I11133  FURBEE  WAITMAN  5 Sep 1783  9 Jun 1863  Waitman Furbee was born 5 Sep 1783 in Magnolia, Kent County, Delaware Colony, British Colonial America. His father was Caleb Furbee b. 1752 to Bowers Furbee and Anna (Sipple) Furbee. His mother was Sarah (Craige) Furbee b. 1753 to Alexander Craige and Elizabeth (Mann) Craige. The couple were married 177X? In Kent County, Delaware Colony. Waitman was named after his Uncle Waitman "Wait" Furbee and Waitman Sipple Jr. was his paternal grandmothers father.

Caleb, Sarah and most of their children (What Children?), including Waitman, migrated to Monongalia County, Virginia, now West Virginia Abt 1790. It was there that Waitman me Catherine N. "Katy" Leap. Her father was John Wesley Leap b. 1735 to Johannes Nickel "John" Leab (?) and Barbara (mnu) Leab (?). Her mother is Margaret Emily (Crow) Leap b. 1750 to John Crow and Mary (Hart) Crow.

Waitman and Katy were married Abt. 1806 in Monongalia County. Their children John George, Elizabeth, Caleb, Samuel, Sarah Evelyn, Mary Bell and Catherine Miranda were all born in Monongalia County. The family lived there until 1823.

2 May 1812 Secured a Peace Bond in Monongalia County, Virginia, United States as the story goes it was done to protect Gabriel from John Wesley Jr.

Sometime in 1823 the family migrated south west to the headwaters of Little Fishing Creek, Tyler County, Virginia, what is now near Wileyville, Wetzel County, West Virginia. This is where their last child Gabriel was born. It was a few years later in 1825 that Waitman was granted 100 acres on Little Fishing Creek and an additional 170 acres on McElroy's Creek, wich is significantly south of Little Fishing Creek in both Tyler and Doddridge Counties. WHY DID HE MOVE IN 23 not 25?

01 Jun 1830 - 1830 Census Tyler County, Virginia, United States Name: Hastman Furby. Free White Persons - Males - 40 thru 49.

Other early settlers of the region were the Alley, Anderson, Clark, Gorby, Joliff, Long, Martin, Mason, Mooney, Postlethwait, and Young families. A Bowers and John Furbee (Clarify what Bowers and what John) were granted land nearby from the Commonwealth of Virginia who was trying to encourage settlement in that area. All of these lives became intertwined, but none immediately so much as the Postlewait family. Richard Nelson I lived over the hill from the Furbees, to the West on Rocky Run, having secured a land grant of 300 acres from the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1826. 4 Jul 1860 - 1860 Census
Name Watesman Furbey. Age 75. Birth Year abt 1785. Gender Male. Birth Place Delaware. Home in 1860 Wetzel, Virginia. Residence Post Office: Knobford (Knob Fork).

Waitman died in 1863 of Dropsey. He and Katy were laid to rest, with no head stones, on his farm on what is now known as Higgins Cemetery. I, as well as other researchers, believe it was finances that led to the lack of any sort of marker.

His will was probated in Tyler County.

The couple do have a headstone now, placed "By Descendants" well after they died, some time Aft. 1970. Bowers F. Furbee, son of Samuel Furbee, son of Waitman and other descendants such as Carl Bryan Shuman, great - grandson of Sarah Evelyn Furbee, daughter of Waitman, knew the precise spot within the family cemetery where our ancestors had been laid to rest. If not for their knowledge no marker would exist today.

* Waitman or a Caleb Furbee bought 230 acres of land for $4.95 on West Run. This Caleb was his Dad or a cousin. We do know this Caleb was married to a woman named Sarah and Waitman's mother was indeed a Sarah. I think Waitman is who bought the land. I need the year!

* McKimmie lists 6 children only. Check DNA and Census for Children.
