4257 | I23240 | Emert | Frederick E. | 12 Jan 1790 | 10 Apr 1871 | 0 | Frederick Jr. served in the War of 1812 (10 Jan 1914-14 May 1814), moved from Emert's Cove to Tuckaleechee Cove, Blount Co., TN about 1836. Frederick Jr. was a Methodist Minister there. He's mentioned in the Tennessee the Volunteer State 1769-1923: Volume 4 CLYDE B. EMERT. Clyde B. Emert, editor and proprietor of the Maryville Times, is one of this city's most influential and substantial citizens. A native of Blount county, his birth occurred on the 17th of February, 1886, a son of Rev. John M. and Elizabeth (Bright) Emert. The paternal great-grandfather, FREDERICK EMERT, was one of the pioneer settlers of Blount county and a Methodist minister of repute. He was a prime factor in securing the first Methodist Episcopal camp ground in this county. His son was John N. Emert, likewise a native of this county and a man of prominence. The maternal grandfather, Harvey S. Bright, was for years prominent in the civic life of Blount county. He was member of the county court for several terms and contributed in a marked degree to the development and improvement of the community in which he resided. John M. Emert was born in Blount county and for years has been active in the ministry of the Methodist church. He is a man of genial and pleasing personality and has won the confidence and esteem of all who know him. He holds the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Lincoln Memorial university. Frederick Emmert Jr. was born in what is now Tennessee. He was drafted on January 10th, 1814 as a private in Captain Isaac Williams' Company, part of Colonel Samuel Bunch's Regiment during the War of 1812 and was discharged on May 14th, 1814. Frederick Jr. and his wife Celia Drusilla lived in the Emert Cove, Sevier County, Tennessee area before moving to Tuckaleechee Cove, Blount County, Tennessee about 1826. Frederick Jr. was a Methodist minister there. They were listed in the 1830 Federal Census of Blount County, Tennessee. There were ten children inthe household: one male age 5 and under; one male and three females age 5-10; two males and one female age 10-15; and two males age 15-20. They were also listed in the 1840 Federal Census of Blount County, Tennessee. There were now eight children at home: one male and one female age 10-15; one male and three females age 15-20; and two males age 20-30. In 1850 they were still listed in the Federal Census of Blount County, Tennessee. All the children had married and left home except one son, Frederick S., age 24. They also were listed in the 1860 Federal Census of Blount County, Tennessee. There were no children in the household at this time. Frederick Emmert Jr. was listed alone in the 1870 Federal Census of Blount County, Tennessee. He was buried beside his wife in the Campground Cemetery. Frederick Emmert, the youngest son of Philip and Maria Catharina Kamm Emmert, was born in Richmond Township, Berks County, PA. Here he lived until his marriage. After his marriage to Barbara Ann Neidig, they settled in Rockland Township of Berks County, PA. Apparently he was apprenticed to learn the art of shoemaking. This was mentioned as his occupation. Frederick was a soldier of the Revolution. Apparently, he enlisted for a three year term as a private in the Pennsylvania regiment under Colonel Anthony Wayne from Berks County. This regiment was sent to reinforce Colonel Benedict Arnold's retreating army in May 1776. He was stationed at Fort Ticonderoga. Most likely he was in the Battle of Lack Champlain on October 11-13-, 1776. Also he served in the Battle of Brandywine on Thursday, September 11, 1777 and in the Battle of Germantown on Saturday, October 4, 1777 as well as the other battles of the American Revolution. He was present at the Battle of Yorktown when Lord Cornwallis surrendered on Friday, October 9, 1781. He received an honorable discharge for his military service in the Continental army at the close of the American Revolution. His children filed a pension claim on his military service, but it was rejected for an unknown reason. He was listed on the 1779 and 1780 tax lists for Rockland Township of Berks County, PA. He was only taxed for one cattle. His occupation on the tax lists was "cordwainer." About 1782, Frederick Emmert and his wife Barbara Ann Neidig took their family to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) from Berks County, PA. From there, they migrated through the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to Sullivan County, State of Franklin (later North Carolina, now Tennessee). They paid a brief visit with his brother, George Emmert and family there. They then went on to Greene County, State of Franklin (later North Carolina, now Tennessee) from Sullivan County. On Thursday, July 12, 1792, he bought 200 acres of land for 30 Pounds currency from John Peeble in Greene County and was located on the watershed of Sinking Creek, a part of Nolachucky River. Then he sold this same tract of land for 100 Pounds currency to Jacob Hise of Greene County. Shortly after last recorded deed in Greene County, Frederick and Barbara Ann migrated to Sevier County, Territory of United States of America South of River Ohio (now Tennessee) sometime in the latter part of 1795. They settled in the Emert Cove and surrounding area, a part of the East Fork of Little Pigeon River. Records from Tennessee State Library & Archives in Nashville show he had made four entries (636 acres, 105 acres, 57 acres and 87 acres) by the right of occupancy in the Emert Cove of Sevier County, TN. These were granted by the State of Tennessee on Saturday, June 23, 1810 and Wednesday, June 27, 1810. Frederick Emmert signed the "1813 Petition From South of Rivers Frenchbroad and Holston to the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee" for the redress on the validity of land claims. - "The Book of Regan/Reagan," His tomb stone and military plaques read: 1829 FE Jan 7 Frederick Emert Oct. 11, 1754 (PA) - Jan. 7, 1929 Revolutionary War PA line Placed by the John Sevier Chapter of the Tennessee Society Sons of the Revolution 2004 Revolutionary War Soldier Died on January 7, 1829 placed by Greater Smokies Chapter, NSDAR he information presented for Johan Philip Emmert and Maria Catherina Kamm/Kamp was published in "The Book of Ragan/Reagan," written by Donald B. Emert, Sr. Most of what is known about Frederick Emert and Barbara Ann Neidig comes from several dispositions taken in 1843, 1844, and 1845 to apply for a Revolutionary War soldier's pension under the Pension Act of 4 July 1836. The application was rejected because the law did not permit heirs to get pensions. Three of Frederick Emert's children testified in the dispositions, Daniel Emert, Barbara Emert, and Frederick Emert, Jr. . (Revolutionary War Pension Application of Frederick Emert, No R3345, National Archives, Washington, D.C.) EMMERT, Frederick or Frederick Emert, Barbara, R3345, PA Line, a son Daniel Emert applied 6 Dec. 1843 in Sevier County TN, aged 56 and stated that soldier died 7 Jan 1829 and widow died 7 July 1842 leaving children: Barbary Shultz aged 66, Polly Shields aged 64, Elizabeth Roberts, Frederick Emert, Jr., Margaret Shields, Daniel Emert & Katherine or Catherine Evans, one Martin Shultz was a JP for Sevier County. This was mentioned as his occupation. He enlisted for a three-year term as a private in the Pennsylvania regiment. While serving in the American Army, Frederick Emert served under the command of General George Washington and Colonel Anthony Wayne from Berks County, PA.. This regiment was sent to reinforce Colonel Benedict Arnold's retreating army in May 1776. He was stationed at the Lakes in Canada at Fort Ticonderoga. He was in the Battle of Lack Champlain on October 11-13 of 1776. He was also in the Battle of Brandywine on Thursday, September 11, 1777 and in the Battle of Germantown on Saturday, October 4, 1777 as well as the other battles of the American Revolution. After serving a tour of duty, about March/April 1778, he returned home and married Barbara Ann Neidig [Anna Barbara Neidig], daughter of Daniel and Anna Margaretha Neidig, in Upper Hanover Township, Philadelphia County (now Montgomery County), Pennsylvania. Barbara Ann was born on Saturday, 06 May 1758 in Upper Hanover Township, Philadelphia County (now Montgomery County), Pennsylvania. Frederick and Barbara Ann settled in Rockland Township of Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was listed on the 1779 and 1780 tax lists for Rockland Township of Berks County, PA. He was only taxed for one cattle. His occupation on the tax lists was "cordwainer." When he was drafted for a second tour of duty, he hired a substitute in order to stay at home with his new wife. He later re-enlisted and served until the end of the war. He was present at the Battle of Yorktown when Lord Cornwallis surrendered on Friday, October 9, 1781. He received an honorable discharge for his military service in the Continental Army at the close of the American Revolution. In one of the dispositions Elizabeth Henry stated that Frederick Emert and her husband, William Henry, would stay up all night talking about the Revolutionary War and the hard times they experienced. Frederick Emert had a discharge from the Army that was destroyed when his home burned. About 1782, Frederick Emert and his wife Barbara Ann Neidig took their family to Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) from Berks County, Pennsylvania.. From there, they migrated through the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia to Sullivan County, State of Franklin (later North Carolina, now Tennessee). They paid a brief visit with his brother, George Emert and family there. George Emert was also a soldier of the Revolution. They then went on to Greene County, State of Franklin (later North Carolina, now Tennessee) from Sullivan County. Then he sold this same tract of land for 100 Pounds currency to Jacob Hise of Greene County. Shortly after last recorded deed in Greene County, Frederick and Barbara Ann migrated to Sevier County, Territory of United States of America South of River Ohio (now Tennessee) about 1793. Frederick Emert's son, Daniel Emert, stated in the 1850 Federal Census that he was born in 1793 in Tennessee; Frederick Emert's daughter, Catherine Emert Evans, stated in the 1850 Federal Census that she was born in 1794 in Tennessee, however, Frederick Emert's daughter, Elizabeth Emert Roberts, stated in the 1850 Federal Census that she was born in 1783 in Virginia. (1850 Federal census, Sevier Co., TN, p. 400, 407) They settled in the surrounding area of the East Fork of the Little Pigeon River. This area came to be known as Emert Cove. Records from Tennessee State Library & Archives in Nashville show he had made four entries (636 acres, 105 acres, 57 acres and 87 acres) by the right of occupancy in the Emert Cove area of Sevier County, Tennessee. These were granted by the State of Tennessee on Saturday, June 23, 1810 and Wednesday, June 27, 1810. In Goodspeed's History of Tennessee it is mentioned that Frederick Emert and Martin Shultz were among the earliest settlers of Sevier County after the Treaty of Dumplin Creek in 1785 in which the Cherokee Indians relinquished their rights and title to the lands embraced within Sevier County. It is mentioned that Frederick Emert and Martin Shultz settled in the area that became know as Emert's Cove. (History of Tennessee, by Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1887 (reprinted in 1991), p 835) In 1805 Peter Huskey entered 57 acres of land in the Emert's Cove area of Sevier County, Tennessee and held it for a short time. From Tennessee State Library & Archives, Nashville, Tennessee, there is a land grant (No. 1815) for Frederick Emert, assignee of Peter Huskey. By this grant, Peter Huskey sold the 57 acres of land in the Emert's Cove area to Frederick Emert prior to the issuance of the land grant from the state of Tennessee in 1806. John Huskey had four other land entries dated from 13 Feb 1832 through 1 Oct 1834 in the Surveyor's Book No. 1 of Sevier County, Tennessee (Register of Deeds Office). All these lands were located on the waters of Cove Creek in Wear's Valley of Sevier County, Tennessee. These entries joined the lands of Aaron Crowson, Frederick Emert and Reuben Hatcher as well as his own land. Frederick Emert signed the "1813 Petition From South of Rivers Frenchbroad and Holston to the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee" for the redress on the validity of land claims in Sevier County, Tennessee. This petition is in the Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, Tennessee. Frederick and Barbara Ann continued to live on their farm in Emert's Cove, until their death. Both of them were buried in the family graveyard on their farm. This graveyard was given to the Emert's Cove community as a public burying ground by Frederick's son Daniel and his wife Sarah, and was later named as Emert's Cove Cemetery. This cemetery is located about 3 miles East of Gatlinburg on the old Emert Cove Road in the town of Pittman Center today. The early Emert settlers spoke with a distinct German brogue. Because of this it is assumed the family originally came from Germany. (Article on Emert Family, Montgomery's Vindicator, Sevier County, Tennessee Newspaper, 31 Jul 1940) It has been said that the late Edward Emert of Sevierville, TN had a family chest, which was brought to Sevier County, TN from Pennsylvani circa 1795. This chest was given to Barbara Ann by her parents. The handwriting on the chest has puzzled many folks. Probably it is written in "Old German Script" and reads "Barbara Neidigin, Anno 1772." While there are some records beginning in 1601, unfortunately, the Neckarelz church records are missing for the period of 1623 to 1677 and there is another gap in the burial and confirmation records between 1717 to 1737. We do have a burial record for Hans in 1700 which gives his age as 66. His son Hans Peter was the father of Johan Philip Emmert. Peter was the brother who stayed in Neckarelz and is the ancestor of all the German cousins there. The article provides as much information as we have from the German church records about the families including occupations and sponsors. You might find a copy of the publication in your local genealogical library or you can order a copy for $12 from the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. I would be interested in your family information especially if it is documented. 4269 | I23278 | EMERT | JOHAN PHILLIP | 1716 | 1796 | 0 | The name Emmert also seen as Emert and Emmertt and Emertt is of Germanic origin. This family hailed from Leipzig, Sachsen, Germany but there are no further specifics regarding locality found to date (06/02/2014). Philip Emert first went to Rotterdam, Holland from his home in Germany and boarded the ship "Alexander and Ann" for the trip to America by way of Cowes, England and on September 5th, 1730, he arrived in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (now USA). He and his wife, Maria, settled in the Uppler Hanover Township, Philadelphia County (now Montgomery County), Pennsylvania. He was listed as the sixth person on the "List of Heads of Families Belonging to the Congregation of New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church" and was "eleted to the duties of office" at the same church on January 1st, 1738, listed as Emmert surname. The Parliament of Great Britain passed an act to allow foreign protestants in the British Colonies in America to become naturalized citizens during the reign of King George II. Fast to take advatage of the situation on August 16th, 1741 he took the oath of allegiance to Great Britain and the province of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. In late August of 1741, he and his brother-in-law George Pfaltgraff made an overseas trip to visit Germany for their father-in-law Caspar Kamm for reasons unknown. They came home on the ship "St. Mark" on September 26th, 1741 from Rotterdam, Holland again via Cowes, England. The following information was provided by Jay Webb as being the parents of Frederick E. Emert, Sr.: Father: Johan George Emmot; b. 1716 in Leipzig, Germand; d. 1796 in Reading, Burks County, PA Mother: Eva Marie Graff They married in 1742 in Pennsylvania an had the following children: Daniel; Elizabeth (m. Henry Harkelrood); Jacob; Frederick E. (m. Barbara Ann Neidig); George (1757-1846), m. Mary Conley; and Leonard (1774-1804), m. Catherine Gunckle. I have found many more resources pointing to Peter and Anna as being Johan's parents, though due to all of the work Jay Webb has put into our family research it would be remiss of me to not include this information in these notes. The evidence of such is below. The information presented for Johan Philip Emmert and Maria Catherina Kamm/Kamp was published in "The Book of Ragan/Reagan," written by Donald B. Reagan (pp. 413-416) as being the parents of Frederick E. Emert, Sr. CHRISTENING: 17 February 1704 in Neckarelz, Baden, Germany Witnessed by Peter Kessler who was a citizen and blacksmith in Neckarelz, Baden, Germany. ALIAS: Johann Philip Emert BIOGRAPHY: The name EMMERT/EMERT is of German Origin. Johan Philip Emmert is the paternal ancestor of the Emmert brothers, Philip, Frederick and Daniel who married Ragan sisters, Elizabeth, Sarah and Celia Drusilla, and sister Louisa who probably married Ragan brother, Robert Nelson in Sevier County, Tennessee is believed to be Philip Emmert. He was born circa 1704 in Neckarelz, Baden, Germany. He went to Rotterdam, Holland from his home place in Germany and boarded the ship "Alexander and Ann" for the trip to America by the way of Cowes, England. On Tuesday, 05 September 1730, he arrived in the town of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. About 1731 Philip Emmert was married to Maria Catharine Kamm, daughter of Johannes Caspar KAMM and Anna Catharina Franck, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Maria Catharine Kamm was baptized on Saturday, 23 December 1713 at Eppingen Reformed Church in Eppingen, Germany. Philip Emmert and his wife Maria Catharine settled in Upper Hanover Township, Philadelphia County (now Montgomery County), Pennsylvania. He was listed as the sixth person on the "List of the Heads of Families Belonging to the Congregation of New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church" and was "elected to the duties of office" at the same church on Wednesday, 01 January 1738. The Parliament of Great Britain passed an act to allow foreign Protestants in the British Colonies in America to become naturalized citizens during the reign of King George II. On Wednesday, 16 August 1741, Philip Emmert took the oath of allegiance to Great Britain and the province of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. In late August of 1741, he and his brother-in-law George Pfaltgraff made an overseas trip to visit Germany for their father-in-law Caspar Kamm for an unknown reason. They came home on the ship "St. Mark" on Tuesday, 26 September 1741 from Rotterdam, Holland by the way of Cowes, England. Philip Emmert apparently had died before Friday, 28 May 1762 in Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. On that date, his wife Maria Catharina Kamm Emmert was appointed as administratrix of her husband's estate. There have been no other records found on the proceedings and the settlement of his estate there. There was no further data on his wife Maria Catharina Kamm Emmert found after the last recorded entry. (1) Janet Beall Broadbent, Beall Broadbent Family Org., Inc., Los Altos, CA 94022. It is not far from Eppingen, where there were KAMMs. It was a spa and was made part of an imperial city by Frederick BARBAROSSA wo that it owed no feudal allegiance to the Duke of Schwabia or later the Dukes of Wurtemburg, Baden or the Count Palatine, who all owned bits of land in that area. At some point its imperial status was revoked and it was awarded to Hessedarmstadt. The province of Hessedarmstadt came all the way down to the north bank of the Neckar River and within a few miles of Mossbach, which was and remains in Baden. There were more EMMERTS in Mossbach and for a longer period of time, which is also where LOY/LAYs lived. (7d) 1762: George EMMERT was listed as a bondsman in the probate of Johan Philip EMMERT's estate, Berks Co., PA. . Emmert appears in records as Emert, Emmert, Emmerich, Emrick and is believed to be of German origin since the name appears in German records in Baden, Wurtemburg, Hesse-Darmstadt, Bavaria, etc. Johan Philip Emmert arrived in Philadelphia, PA, 5 SEP 1730, on the ship "Alexander and Ann" from Rotterdam by way of Cowes, England. LDS Santa Clara Lib. California, 974.8/p418, states- "A Palatine imported in the ship "Alexander and Anne, " William Clymer, Master from Rotterdam but last from Deal, qualified 5 SEP 1730." According to Helen Hewitt Johan Philip Emmert came into Philadelphia again on 26 SEP 1741, along with his brother-in-law, George Pfaltzfraf, on the "St. Mark." They must have returned to Germany to settle an estate of a relative of Casper Kamm's as he [Casper Kamm] made out his will 3 NOV 1741; Will was proved 1752. Caspar's will listed daughter, Catherine Emmert, and son-in-law, Phillip Emmert. It has not been determined whether Phillip and Catherine were married before or after arrival in Pennsylvania. Received the following August 4, 2000, from Helen Hewitt: Hi Joe, Don't think I know you but we are related. Casper Kamm arrived pre-list (1720) and was not on the same ship as J. Philip Emmert. If you would like to verify this information, check the ship's list or Annette Kunselman Burgert's book "18th Century Emmigrants" V. I. Helen Hewitt According to the research of late Vernon Ray- Johan Philip Emmert was naturalized as citizen of Great Britain in 1741 in Philadelphia. William Kinke's book, "The History of the Goshenhoppen Reformed Church,"- Phillip Emmert was located in the Goshenhoppen region as early as 1731 and was charter member of this church. New Goshenhoppen Church records show the dates of baptism of the first 5 children. Donald Reagan, Helen Hewitt, and Pat Manning have added children 6-10, all born in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. |
