It is not known where he came from. He had a farm in Baltimore Co, MD in
1725. Charles and Grace lived on the tract known as "Carpenter's Plai ns"
on Swan Creek. Charles bought more land adjoining the first track about
two years before his death. He arrived in Baltimore Co. with enough
money to buy land and establish a farming operation which supported his
family. - - TCR
When he died, he left his land to his two sones, Daniel and Charles, the n
eleven and five years of age, and made provisions for his wife, Grace,
a nd his two daughters Sarah and Margaret.
The surname Anderson emerged as a Sco ttish Clan or family in the
territory of Angus, they are decended from MacGhi lle Andrews, servent of
St Andrew, Scotland's patron Saint. They held territ ories in Moidart,
but later moved to Dadenoch in 1300, as recorded by the gre at Kinara
Manuscript.....For the next two or three centuries the surname Ande rson
played an important role in the highlands and in the affairs of scotland .
The family motto was "Stand Sure". The Coat of arms was Silver with a
bla ck cross. The crest was an Oak Tree.

In 1776 the Andereson family was living not far from Havre de Grace,in
the no rtheastern part of Baltimore Co., Maryland. Baltimore had been
part of Hartf ord Co., MD. He grew up on his father's farm. He becamea
millwright and is refered to as such a tradesman in Hartford County
records. He inherited a sm all parcel of land from his mother, as well as
half-interest in his father's farms, and he bought several other tracts
in the general neighborhood. He was a large land-owner, a community
leader, an elected member of the local govern ment unit and a military
officer...
In 1775, Charles Anderson began to sell his land. The Anderson family
moved west in late 1777 or early 1778. When h e left Maryland, his wife
and all eight children accompanied him. No known c hildren were born in
the Monongahela Valley. They moved to Muddy Creek, Cumb erland Township,
Washington Co. (Green Co.), Pennsylvania by September 1778. He lived the
rest of his life there. Muddy Creek is located about a half mi le
northwest of Carmichaels.
Charles and Mary have eight children recorded i n the 1776 Cencus of
Susquehanna Hundred. Oddly, particularly in view of the large acreage he
owned, no slaves are listed. Other nearby families are sho wn as slave
owners. He may not have believed in slavery and refused to have any part
of it.
His will was probated in Green Co. Pennsylvania. It leaves all the land
and almost everything else to his son, William. William's sons, William
and Charles, grand-daughters Drucilla Anderson and Polly Snively are
given small items. His son Charles was given a cross cut saw. The
execut ors for the will were his sons William and James. No other childred
were ment ioned, so six were cut out entirely.
Charles is buried in Cumberland Township Farm Cemetery, Greene County, Pennsylvania
Charles had seen the onening of the valleys beyo nd the mountains to white
man's settlement and had been among the first to mo ve and settle the new
lands.

The area he was born in became Susquehanna Hundred, Hartford Co.,
Maryland in 1774.
When the family moved to Muddy Creek, Charles was 15. He tomahawked a

Charles (III) was given one cross-cut saw in his father's will. He
married M argaret prior to 1788 and they lived on Muddy Creek, Cumberland
Township, Was hington CO., Pennsylvania. This area later became Green
Co., Pennsylvania.
Charles, Margaret and family moved to Tyler Co. (Wetzel County, West Virginia.), West
Virginia about 1825. They lived on Bear Run, Wetzel County, West Virginia, West Virginia.
Charles reco rded two surveys for land which he claimed by right of
settlement in November 1826 and got patents from the Commonwealth in due
course. He and his son-in -law took up and bought the greatest part of
the land on Knob Fork of Fish Cr eek, on Bear Run, Wetzel County, West Virginiawhich flows into Knob
Fork and on the ridge between Knob For k and Little Fishing Creek, where
Low Gap Church is now located. They cut ho mes and farms out of the

[1760681.ged]

When Elias first saw Margaret, he was a young man about twenty-six years
old. She was a young fifteen years old. The meeting took place at a
church gath ering. Of course, no introduction and no exchange of words.
He just keep lo oking at her, thinking--such a beautiful girl! "I would
love to have her for my wife." Sometime later they did meet, and he
learned that her name was Ma rgaret Sole. Since people married young in
those days, a few months of court ship and they were married.
Elias and Margaret set up housekeeping on his fath ers farm on Bear Run,
Wetzel County, West Virginia., West Virginia. Since this was a very large farm, two
brothers (Garrison and Ezra) lived on the same farm.
{The time li ne for this pagagraph might be off since the two children
were born in 1862 a nd 1863. Also, they were married in 1861. Tim
Ashcraft}
THey lived on the farm for a few years. Two children (Sarah and Ezra)
were born there. In th e meantime, Margaret's father died, and her mother
was living with them. Thi s was about the year of 1860 (the days of the
Civil War). Elis was called to report to the Examining Board or whatever
they called it. He reported for t he examination and showed them his knee
(which he had infured with a corn cut ter). He told them, "Aside from his
knee, God Almighty never made a better m an above the shirt tail."
Elias had a cousin (Lute Anderson) living out West i n Missouri. He kept
writing and telling Elias about the western country and what a wonderful
place for a young couple to live. So, Elias decided to go W est. He,
Margaret, their two children, and Margaret's mother made the trip in a
wagon pulled by a team of mules. They stayed im Missouri four or five
ye ars. One child, Alcinda Maud, was born there. Margaret's mother
became very homesick for the hills of Wetzel County, West Virginia. so they made the long
trek back.
They settled on the home place (Bear Run) and seven more children were
born. Abou t 1889, since both of his brothers had left, Garrison for
Calhoun Co., West V irginis and Ezra for Roane Co., West Wirginia, Elias
decided to move again. This time they sold the farm. They, along with
their eight youngest children , loaded their possessions onto a wagon and
with a mule team moved from Bead Ruun. They went to New Martinsville and
put their wagon, mules and all on a Boat and went down the Ohio River to
Ravenswood. They bought a farm near Liv erpool, Jackson Co. Elias had a
mill to grind both corn and wheat. He also had a blacksmith shop.
Business was good. Everything was going well, and ev eryone was happy
(especially the younger children).
During the Grover Clev eland Administration ahrd times (a near depression)
hit the country. To amke matters worse Elias had gone on some notes for
his brother, Garrison. Those were the days whena man had to pay his
debts. So Elias lost some money in t he deal. Margaret thought he should
not have signed the notes, to which Elia s replied, "But Margaret, he was
my brother."
The family moved again and s ettled near Peniel, Roane Co., West
Virginia. In the late 1800's they moved to Calhoun Co. They stayed for
a year or so at the home of George Lynch, Alt izer. Later they moved to
Jesses Run, ehere they spent their remaining years .
In their last days, Elias and Margaret shared the same love for each
other as in their younger years. She being younger than he, could walk
to visit t he neighbors. In the evening he would sit on the porch
watching for her. Wh en he would see her coming he was like a sixteen
year old with his first love . "There comes Margaret", you would hear him
say.
After he passed away, in 1917, she said sadley, "I was never lonely when
Elias was here with me."
The y both died at Jesses Run and are buried in the Gibson Cemetery,
Calhoun Co., West Virginia.
