My father Ronald Stuart Sapp always listed the birth date of William Shuman as 1805. Most family trees I see online also list his birth as 1805. I decided to try and calculate a more precise birth date for William based on census records and his tombstone. The results were very interesting. Using all possible information William could have been born as early as September 6th, 1803 and as late as August 4th, 1808. If you look only at the 1860 and 1870 Census records he would have been born between August 4th, 1807 and July 24th, 1808. By combining information from Willliam's Census of 1850 and his tombstone his possible birth date range is June 28th, 1804 and September 6th, 1804. If you look only at the information on his tombstone he would have been born between June 28th, 1804 and June 28th, 1805. Adding the baseline only of 1805 this would take us to his birth occurring between January 1st, 1805 and June 28th, 1805. I went into this in hopes of at least narrowing down his birth to a six to nine-month period. I am leaving this with more questions than I began with. For now, I will be leaving his birth year as 1805 but I felt it was very important to document my findings in hopes that it will help me or another Shuman researcher." Kellie Sue Sapp King |

She was forthright with him and he took his marriage vows to her with an awesome sense of 'In sickness and in health' and a bittersweet feeling must have been there when they heard 'Until death us part'. To him it must have only be an existence without her and he wanted every moment of their life to count. His family were very upset about the marriage. The Shumans had nothing against her personally, it was the TB, and it scared them. There was a happy reprieve that ended in tragedy when they had a son who died in infancy of TB. Kinsey followed soon after their son and Lizze soon after of TB and a broken heart. The Shumans were understandably very upset that all three had died of Tuberculosis and Lizzie was viewed as a murderess by the family. As she was the one who did this they were not welcome to be laid to rest with the rest of the family. I do not know if the family ever regretted that choice but I do know I admire the courageous choice the couple made." I have read Grandpa Bryan's Will, written by his own hand. I do not yet have a digital or transcribed copy. My Father claims that his grandfathers name is something like William Carl Bryan Jennings Randolph Shuman. A cousin is going to retrieve additional records ti help prove this statement. For most of his life Grandpa very active in both County and State politics, while still doing some farming. He achieved wide acceptance at both the County and State levels as a good man and as a political figure. In 1940 he is listed as owning the family homestead at a value of 5,000 dollars. In our family scrapbooks we have many pictures of him with his political cohorts.Upon his passing one of his friends, who was very close to him sent his daughter Maxine and her son Ronald long, handwritten letters of condolences, Senator Robert Byrd.
