Enlisted in the Revolutionary Army in Delaware in 1776 and was discharged in January of 1783. He had been wounded twice during his service. Served under Captain Caldwell, Captain Holland and Captain Jacquets, and under Colonel Patterson, Colonel Hall, and Colonel Vaughn. Captured in the battle of "Ninety Six" and paroled by Colonel Croger. He drew two pensions; one for being an invalid (arm wounds at "Ninety Six") and one for having been a Revolutionary War Soldier.' "This was posted by a cousin (grlncali) to the Ancestry.com personal military page of Joseph on April 7th, 2012. Prior to that it may have been in the Broderbund Gedcom 2810 where my father (Ronald Stuart Sapp) acquired it on March 25th, 1999. I have seen this listed in many other places as well. The original author of this information nor anyone who has referenced it from that time have provided any proof as to the parents of Joseph let alone that he had brothers who also fought in the war." (August 16, 1780), Guilford Court House (March 15 , 1781), Hobkirk's Mill ( April 25, 1781 and the Battle of Fort Ninety-Six, near Abbeville, S.C. until taken prisoner by the British (June 14, 1781). While attempting to scale the wall of the fort, Joseph Sapp was severely wounded in the right shoulder and arm, and was eventually discharged by reason of disability at Philadelphia, January 26, 1783. He served four years under Captains Caldwell, Holland and Jacquets, and Colonels Patterson, Hall and Vaughn. He was in active battle at Creckholds Town, Staten Island and at Monmouth. In the surprise at Camden he was wounded in the arm by musket ball and buckshot. He was in the hosp ital at Charlotte for three weeks. In the attack on Fort Ninety-Six, he was again wounded. He was captured by the British and paroled by Colonel Croger, the British officer in charge of the prisoners. He received his final disch arge from Colonel Water Stewart, inspector of the northern army. His was dis charged owing to wounds on January 26, 1783. In 1820 he applied for pension in Monongahela County. Pension was granted in 1822 and for a time he drew o ne pension as an invalid and another as a Revolutionary soldier. He was dropped from the rool in 1824, but in 1826 the Secretary of War restored both pensions. His supporting data was filed by Colonel Ralph Berkshire, William Lazier, Thomas Wilson and N. Evans. His pension records shows an annual allow ance of $60.00 and began on March 4, 1795 and as an invalid from June 7, 1785. His service is listed as being on the Deleware Line."
