525 | Blount County, Tennessee is an alternate place of birth for John. 1842 is an alternate date of birth, I suppose by subtracting the age he was in the 1920 Census is how that date has come into assistance for John. In his community he was known and identified as "Hairy John" because of the great beard he always wore. "Beaver John" was also a nickname commonly, though not as commonly, identified with him. John served in the American Civil War and was a Union Soldier in Company E, 1st Light Artillery Battalion, Tennessee. He enlisted October 09, 1863 at Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. Remarks on Civil War record states he was 5'9" tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. He proudly stated that he cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln for president. He and his family are listed in the 1870 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee. The entry is below: John N. 29 (1841) Margaret J. 23 (1847) James T. 3 (1867) William W. 1 (1869) John and his ever growing family were also in the 1880 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee. I do not know who the Margaret King is who is listed as 77 years old born in 1803 but I believe she was a domestic servant who had also been seen working for others in this immediate family. The entry is as follows: John N. 39 (1841) Margaret 33 (1847) John T. 12 (1868) William W. 10 (1870) Margaret J. 8 (1872) John H. 6 (1874) Mary E. 4 (1876) Martha A. 3 (1877) Nancy M. 4/12 (1880) Margaret King 77 (1803) He was one of the builders of Little Greenbrier Log Schoolhouse which was built in 1882 and was one of the founders of the Primitive Baptist Church. John and Margaret had moved from their home in Wear's Cove to the home of her parents to care for her mother. This move, in time, made them the parents of the Smoky Mountains well known Walker Sisters. This home was the Walker Sister's Cabin that is still standing in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Their home place is being preserved by the National Park Service. John and his family were also listed in the 1920 Federal Census of Sevier County, Tennessee. The information is below. Dist.# 6 Sheet 2B, #20 WALKER John N. 78 TN widower farmer Margaret J. 49 all can read and write Mary E. 44 Martha A. 42 Nancy M. 39 Eliza S. 37 Hettie R. 30 Daniel G. 28 "Served in the Confederate Army.
