1152 | John Russell King was a devoted family man and just as devoted of a worker. From what information I have been able to gleen he was the type of person anyone would be lucky to call thier friend, and even luckier to call him family or both. He was also a very loving husband who had extreme difficultys after the death of the love of his life, his wife Hattie. After her passing he bagan a battle with depression and alcaholism. He edventually deteriorated to the point where he was arrested in downtown Alcoa, Tennessee for disorderly conduct. He was ment to simply stay for one night night in order to sleep off the effects of the alchahol. The next morning he was found hanging from his belt in the jail cell. There is speculation of homicide due to mob connections that he presumably had aquired during that time of his life. A cross reference note on John Russell can be viewed under his grandson, Roma Russell King. The Stinnett Family Bible at J.B. Stinnett's (Mollies' son) lists information for a Johnnie King. This fact is mentioned in the King Family Record book and that "no one is to sure of this one". After a discussion with Thomas Russell King we believe that the Johnnie in dispute is John Russell King, his grandfather, as he remembers him being refernced as such. 1155 | John T. Debolt is the biological son of Benjamin DeBolt and Dorcas (Wood) DeBolt. Dorcas died giving birth to her son John. Soon after he begins appear on Census records in the household of William and Sarah (Furbee) Shuman. As of yet I have found no court records of William and Sarah (Furbee) Shuman ofically adopting John. His surname appears at times as Debolt and others as Shuman. He is listed in two Census records as son of William, once with the surname Shuman and once with the surname Debolt. At they very least we do know that he was considered family by the Shumans and inherited Shuman Family land. Why this branch of the family took John in is unknown but we do know his mother died giving birth to him, his father remained alive for 35 years after Johns birth and that he had older siblings who were married. Yet he did not live with them after the passing of his mother. That having been said they were family, just not the most immediate family. John's adopted mother was the sister of Samuel Furbee, the children of Waitman Furbee and Catherine (Leap) Furbee. Samueal married Jane Postlethwait, and then married Almeda Cox DeBolt in 1884.Almeda was the same DeBolt kin. Solomon Furbee, the son of Samuel Furbee and Jane (Postlewhait) Furbee married Margaret Debolt, whom he and his wife had fostered, the sister oh John T. Debolt. This not only shows that there is a commonality between the Furbee and Debolt families but that John was not the first child that had been given into the care of the Furbee family and their kin. I have not yet found any reasons for John's siblings to have been fostered. I have no documention on his death at this time, but it is known John did marry and has descendants." 1158 | John was deeded a plantation in Barbados from Robert and Ann Tothill in 1663. It consisted of 10 acres in St. Michael Parish, and belonged to the late Lt . Francis Piggot. It was bounded North and East by other lands of Lt. Piggot, on the South by lands of Charles Playdwell and West by lands which belonged to Bonham Carter. John died and was burried 28 April 1666. John was the overseer of the will of Richard Peers dated 13 March 1661. Edward Peers named John and his daughter, Peers Ashcroft, in his will. The fact that John Ashcroft named his daughter Peers indicates a close relationship. By some accounts John's wife was Elizabeth Peers. In the will of John Peers dated 16 March 1688, Elizabeth Ashcraft and her children John, Richard, Edward, Susanna and Elizabeth were mentioned. Richard Peers son, Edward, wrote his will on 16 April 1665. John Ashcroft and his daughter Peers received legacies equal to the amount left to Edward's sister. Some records indicate that John Ashcrafte was in New England for brief pereiods as early as 1632. It seems that John tried to come to America in 1632 abord the Constance, but the ship never sailed to Virginia ans John is in St. Andrew, Holborn,London between December 1635 and July 1637. 1160 | John was the first permanent Ashcraft in New England. He appeared in Stoning ton, CT in 1662. John and Hannah were married by Thomas Minor. "This John mus t've been quite a lover! We find in the records of the General Court of 1664 -'John Carr* and John Ashcraft were arraigned togeather for various misdemea nors; endeavoring to entice women from their husbands, concealing themselves in houses, writing letters, which were intercepted ect.' The young men were fined and the wives of several men were solemnly warned and ordered to take c are. The attentions must have been reciprocal! "About 4 years later, John m et Hannah Osborne, whose family had migrated from Massachusetts, and they wer e married on 12 September 1670 in Stonington. Possibly this is the same fami ly of Osbornes that lived in Barbados. "Thomas Minor noted in his diary that he had rented a farm to John Ashcraft and the newlyweds went there to live. John and Hannah's first son, named John, was born on the 14th of August 1671 . The following month, on the 4th, it was agreed that John would leave the f arm. The couple and new son moved to a piece of property that had belonged t o John Osborne, Hannah's father. Did the appearance of a grandson inspire th is generosity? "Two years later, a daughter, Hannah, was borne on 5th Januar y, 1673, but unfortunately, died only six days later. This tiny baby was the first Ashcraft to be buried in Connecticute. A second daughter, also named Hannah, was born on January 8, 1675." Due to Indian hostilities, Capt. Geor ge Denison raised and mustered into service a large force of English and Indi ans including John Ashcraft. There were three expeditions in 1676. It was d urind the third expedition the third expedition that the brave Narragansett c hieftain Cononchet was taken prisoner and executed in Stonington. In lieu of payment for his services in "King Phillip's War" John was given land grants (called Volunteer Grants), posthumously. Thomas Minor references "all the sick folke" in his diary and two weeks later noted that on September 16, 1680 John Ashcraft had died. *Carr was a name often associated with the Ashcrafts in PA, MD amd VA. The Ashcraft Family, Descendents of Daniel by Martha Ashcra ft Neal Came to Virginia as early as 1630. It may have been in 1635 on the s hip Constance. Martha Ashcraft Neal disputes this in her book.
