Albert, called the Prince Consort, was the husband of Queen Victoria of Britain. The son of t he Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, he was born on Aug.26, 1819, near Coburg, Bavaria. He married t he young Victoria in 1840. As her closest advisor, Albert exercised a restraining influence o n theimpulsive queen, especially in political matters. Among the political leaders of the per iod, Albert worked well with Sir Robert Peel but quarreled frequently with Viscount Palmersto n. In the Trent Affair of 1861 the prince actually moderated the hostility of Palmerston's go vernment toward the United States.
Albert was a patron of the arts and sciences and one of the organizers ofthe Great Exhibitio n of 1851. His zeal for public moralism in many waysset the tone of mid-Victorian England. Al bert's death on Dec. 14, 1861, partly the result of overwork, deeply affected Victoria, who w ent intoseclusion for several years.
====================================================================
Yet a more promising throne loomed in the near distance. King William IV of Great Britain an d his wife, Queen Adelheid Luise, were unable to procreate any children who survived infancy . Their quickly arranged marriage during the Hannoverian wife search in the late 1810s faile d to continue the dynasty. By the time William IV inherited the throne from his brother Kin g George IV in 1830, little Princess Victoria of Kent was the established heiress to the grea test throne of Europe. And when the King of Great Britain died childless in 1837, his eightee n year old niece ascended the throne as Queen Victoria. By the end of Victorias second yea r as monarch, she still remained single. London became the most delightful and promising dest ination for many young continental princes. Victoria, desperately lonely in her London palace , wanted to find a suitable consort who could keep her company and provide the country with t he next generation of princes. Leopold had waited two decades for this opportunity and quickl y stepped in with his valuable counsel and matrimonial expertise. Among his several nephews , there was one in particular which Leopold had in mind as Victorias future husband, Princ e Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Duke Ernst I and Duchess Louise had a very unhappy marriage. T he heiress of Gotha had arrived at Coburg in 1817 to find a husband who was not much interest ed in her. Duke Ernst paid more attention to the aggrandizement of his little duchy than to t he youthful girl he had married. Within two years of their wedding the couple had two princes , Ernst and Albert. Once having fulfilled her main role to secure the succession, Ernst pai d very little attention to Luise. In her loneliness, the young duchess sought companionship a mong the courtiers of her husbands little court. By the mid-1820s the marriage had collapse d, the ducal couple divorced and Luise fallen in love with a young German aristocrat. Left i n Coburg were the two little princes who never again saw much of their mother. Prince Ernst o f Saxe-Coburg-Gotha would succeed his father on the ducal throne; Prince Albert needed to fin d a future. Leopold I and Queen Louise-Marie were tremendously fond of the two princes. Erns t and Albert spent long periods at their uncles court in Brussels. While Ernst developed int o a licentious young man, Albert remained unspoiled, studious and conscientious of his futur e possibilities. In 1839 the brothers traveled to London to pay their respects to their roya l cousin. Although initially apprehensive about Albert as a husband, Victoria quickly surrend ered to his mild manner and good looks. There engagement was announced with great delight i n 1839. Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Queen Victoria of Great Britain were married i n London on 24 January 1840. No longer were the Coburgs considered a small, forgotten princel y house from the depths of the Thuringian woods. In one decade, the Coburgs had attained th e thrones of three European countries.","tree1"

Regarding the identity of Clemence, mother of Joan of England, wife of
Llywelyn ap Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales, the following information
might be helpful.
The actual entry in the Tewksbury annals which pertains to Joan's
mother, ""Queen"" Clemence, reads as follows:
Year: A.D. 1236
Obiit domina Johanna domina Walliae, uxor Lewelini filia regis
Johannis et regina Clemencie, iii. kal. Aprilis.""
[Died lady Joan lady of Wales, wife of Llywelyn, daughter of King John
and Queen Clemence, 3 Kal. April.""
Reference: Henry Richard Luard, Annales Monastici, 1 (1864): 101.
In this case, the monk was evidently indulging in medieval legalism.
Before her death, Joan had been legitimized by the Pope. On the
basis of that legitimization, the Tewksbury monk evidently chose to
elevate Joan's mother to the status of Queen, as if Joan's mother had
been King John's wife. In point of fact, King John and Joan's mother,
Clemence, were never married. By referring to Joan's mother as
""Queen"" Clemence, the monk who recorded Joan's death was showing his
extreme respect for Joan, not attempting to alter the facts.
The item from the Patent Rolls cited by Robert Battle below involving
Joan's daughter, Susanna, was located by me some years ago.
Basically, the document states that King Henry III is entrusting the
care of his niece, Susanna (daughter of Llywelyn and Joan), to the
care of Nicholas de Verdun and Clemence, his wife.
On the surface, there would be nothing to suggest any connection
between Susanna of Wales and Clemence, wife of Nicholas de Verdun.
However, Susanna was almost certainly being held in England as a
hostage as a guarantee for good behavior on the part of her father,
Llywelyn. Her brother, David, for instance, was being held hostage in
England at the time of the Magna Carta.
My experience with foreign hostages has been that they were often
placed with their English relatives, if any were available. To verify
that, one has only to consult the long list of Scottish hostages in
this period, who I discovered were repeatedly placed with their
English kinsmen. Being a hostage in this period basically meant the
person was under house arrest. Under such circumstances, it is easy
to understand why such persons were placed with their own relations.
The fact that Clemence, wife of Nicholas de Verdun, is mentioned at
all catches the eye. Under normal circumstances, the wife would not
be named. The fact that she was so named suggests she had some
interest in Susanna. Given the fact we know that Susanna's
grandmother was named Clemence, it becomes readily apparent that
Clemence, wife of Nicholas de Verdun, was Susanna's own grandmother.
That this is true is underscored by the fact that when the king later
granted Susanna's care to another individual, no mention was made of
the other man's wife. Even more important, the name Clemence is
extremely rare among English noble women of this period. The fact
that anyone named Clemence would be associated with Susanna is
important.
As for the identity of Clemence de Verdun, Paget shows that she was
the daughter of Roger de Dauntsey, of Wiltshire. It is interesting
that Clemence would hail from Wiltshire. Over the years, I've
noticed that King John had a strong attachment to Wiltshire, it being
the home of his most trusted allies, the Longespee, Marshal, and
Basset families and Geoffrey Fitz Peter, Earl of Essex. Surely, given
that his strongest supporters were all Wiltshire people suggests that
King John spent much time there.
Back in 1992, I shared my findings on Clemence de Dauntsey with Gary
Boyd Roberts, who in turn placed her name as Joan's mother in his
book, Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants, published in 1993. On page
305, he notes that I was then planning an article on Princess Joan and
her mother, Clemence. Due to circumstances beyond my control, the
article was never published as scheduled. However, I do plan to
include a discussion of Clemence de Dauntsey in my forthcoming book,
Plantagenet Ancestry, 3rd edition. For those interested in obtaining
a copy of the book, please contact me privately at my e-mail address
below.
In this case, I think the evidence is suggestive but not conclusive
that Clemence de Dauntsey was Princess Joan's mother. Perhaps with a
little prodding of the records, the desired conclusive evidence of Joan's parentage will ye t be
located.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

She was a religious benefactress who---according to tradition when her husband Leofric, Ear l of Mercia, imposed a heavy tax on the townsfolk of Coventry (1040)---obtained its remissio n by riding naked through the market place. The story occurs in Roger of Wendover (1235). Som e writers assert that Lady Godiva ordered all to remain indoors, which they did except for th e famous Peeping Tom, but he is a later addition to the story.
An explanation of the Lady Godiva story could well be the survival of a Celtic pagan celebrat ion in honour of the goddess-spirit, Epona. To celebrate the passage of the Moon accross th e night sky and, at the same time, the change from winter to spring, a tradition of a naked l ady with long hair riding on a white horse had survived. Quite possibly Leofric, Earl of Merc ia, had dared his wife, Godiva, to take the local girl's place in the procession.","tree1"

BET. 1589 - 1610 King of France
BET. 1572 - 1610 King of Navarre
Henry IV, 1553-1610, King of France (1589-1610) and, as Henry III, King of Navarre (1572-1610 ), was the first BOURBON monarch of France. Raised as a Protestant, he became (1569) the nomi nal head of the Huguenots. To save himself from the Saint Bartholomew's Day massacre (1572) , Henry renounced his faith. He returned to Protestantism in 1576, however, and led a combine d force of Protestants and moderate Catholics against Henry III and the Catholic League (fo r the resulting conflict see under Henry III, above). Henry became heir to the throne in 158 4 and became king after Henry III was assassinated (1589). He defeated the Catholic League a t Arques (1589) and Ivry (1590) but abandoned the siege of Paris when the league received ai d from Spain. In 1593 Henry again abjured Protestantism, allegedly with the remark Paris is w ell worth a Mass. He entered the city in 1594, and his conciliatory policy soon won him gener al support. He waged a successful war (1595-98) against Spain, and by the Edict of NANTES (15 98) established political rights and a measure of religious freedom for the Huguenots. The re st of his reign was spent restoring order, industry, and trade. He was assassinated by a fana tic, Fran©'ois Ravaillac. In 1600 Henry had married MARIE DE' MEDICI, and he was succeeded b y their son LOUIS XIII. Henry IV's gallantry, wit, and concern for the common people have bec ome legendary.

Dear Phil, et al.,
The claim to the French throne by the English monarchs stems from Edward II's marriage to Isa bella (the She-wolf to some) of France, daughter of Philip IV.

John (Jean) I Edward III
The daughters of the sons of Philip IV were passed over, as the throne went (with the exc eption of Jean I, King in 1316) from brother to brother. With the death of Charles IV in 1328 , the direct male Capetian line had daughtered out, and cousin Philip of Valois was chosen a s the next King (reigned 1328-1350).
The contest really got into gear in 1337, with added friction between the
government of Edward III of England and that of Philip VI in Paris with
regard to Edward's lands in France. The claim of Edward III is technically based
on primogeniture, vs. the claim (in Paris) to adhere to 'Salic' law with
inheritance in the male line only.
Of course, in Plantagenet Poker, a few hundred cavalry and archers (with
a few thousand infantry) beats Dieu et Mon Droit. Not just a Highland
tradition: just ask Guillaume le Conquerant.

A Hapsburg ruler who failed
EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN II
By Paula Sutter Fichtner
Yale University Press, $30, 344 pages, illus.
REVIEWED BY BRIDGET HEAL
""By virtually all standards, including his own, Emperor Maximilian II (1527-1576) was a failu re."" So begins Paula Sutter Fichtner's account of the life and times of one of 16th-century E urope's least effective rulers.
As a Hapsburg, Maximilian was a member of one of Europe's leading dynasties. His uncle, Charl es V, had built up a massive empire, uniting the Netherlands, Spain, the New World, Naples, S icily and Germany under his leadership. Charles' son, Philip, inherited the Spanish part of t his empire and the Netherlands, while Germany passed to Charles' brother, Ferdinand, and then ce, in 1562, to Ferdinand's son, Maximilian.
Charles V and Philip II are two of the great figures of European history and have been the su bjects of numerous studies, but ""Emperor Maximillian II"" is the first full biography of Maxim ilian II in English. Perhaps not surprisingly, previous scholars have been deterred by Maximi lian's inadequacies — his inability to achieve any of his stated aims and his failure t o make any lasting impression on Europe's political and religious landscape. As the author po ints out, however, history is not just about great achievements. It is about the totality o f past experience, in which failure and defeat have inevitably played a central role.","tree1"

Napoleon III, Emperor of France, saw his opportunity.
With the United States sundered and convulsed in civil war, he would seize Mexico, impose a C atholic monarchy and block further expansion of the American republic.
In 1863, a French army marched into Mexico City. In 1864, Maximilian, the brother of Austria n Emperor Franz Joseph, was crowned Emperor of Mexico. The French empire had returned to Nort h America a century after its expulsion in 1763.
Secretary of State Seward did nothing until the Union armies had defeated the Confederacy. Th en, he called in Gen. John Schofield, who had wanted to lead an army of volunteers into Mexic o to drive the French out, and instructed him instead to go to Paris. ""I want you to get you r legs under Napoleon's mahogany and tell him he must get out of Mexico,"" Seward told Schofie ld. To impress upon Napoleon that the Union was in earnest, President Johnson, at the urgin g of Grant and Sherman, sent Gen. Sheridan with 40,000 troops to the Rio Grande.
Napoleon got the message. The French army headed for the boats, and Maximilian went befor e a Mexican firing squad.","tree1"

N. de Baumgarten in his ""Genealogies et Mariages Occidentaux des Rurikides Russes du Xe au XI IIe siecle"" (Roma, 1927) states on pp. 22-26 the details of the descendants of Great Prince V sevolod I including Euphrosine. He lists her as the eldest child of Mstislav-Harald's secon d marriage in 1122 to the daughter of Dimitri Zawiditch, possadnik of Novgorod, which daughte r died after 1168.
Some further details concerning this marriage can be found in Vol. XXV of the Camden Society' s 3rd Series of publications, namely: ""The Chronicle of Novgorod, 1016-1471"" translated & edi ted by Robert Michell & Nevill Forbes (London, 1914). It is written that Mstislav married th e still unnamed daughter sometime during 1122 in Kiev and that her father, Dmitri Zavidits, p osadnik of Novgorod, had died July 9, 1118 (p. 10).
I suppose Dmitri Zavidich was probably either of Slavic or Scandinavian origin. Presumably h e come from a family of Boyars in Novgorod as he was a Posadnik of that city.

Soon after the birth of his grandson, Joao VI finally returned to Portugal. Along with him we nt most members of the Braganza family, Pedro remained in Brazil to act as regent for his fat her. Initially Joao VI was appalled at Pedro's desire to remain in Brazil, but after his so n refused to back away from his decision, the king agreed to Pedro and Leopoldina remaining b ehind. Dom Miguel, the king's second son, did not question returning to Portugal for he neve r really adapted to life in Brazil. Besides it is quite possible that Miguel already foresa w his future as monarch of Portugal while his brother remained ruler of Brazil. Leopoldina' s life in Brazil was to be fraught with anxieties over her future, that of her children and t he decreasing attention paid her by her husband. Her first disappointment was the untimely de ath of little Prince Joao in 1822. The arrival of a second daughter one month after Joao's de ath did not improve much the parents' spirits. For Pedro an heir was a necessity since the he ir presumptive to Portugal and Brazil was his increasingly troublesome brother Dom Miguel . A third daughter, Paula Mariana, was born in 1823. In late 1822, Prince Regent Pedro of Bra ganza decided to stage a coup d""etat to emancipate Brazil from the Portuguese crown. Joao V I himself had recommended this course of action as a means of guaranteeing the Brazilian crow n would remain under the Braganzas. During the royal family's long stay in Brazil the colon y had learned how to rule itself without Lisbon""s guidance. Once Napoleon's regime was ousted , Lisbon faintly tried to restore its control over Brazilian affairs. This course of action w as deeply resented by the Brazilians who were deeply resentful of Portuguese involvement in t he country""s internal affairs. Thus to guarantee that Brazil would not be completely lost, Pr ince Regent Pedro gave his support to the independence movement that sealed the colony""s brea k from Lisbon. At the age of twenty-four, the Prince Regent became Emperor Pedro I of Brazil . In the meantime, Pedro I continued to neglect his Austrian consort. It seemed that the onl y reason why he spent any time with her was in an effort to produce the long-awaited heir. Th e couple's fourth daughter, Francisca Carolina, was born in 1824. Pedro""s impatience with Leo poldina knew no bounds and he continued to spend more time away from her and in the arms of h is mistresses. Leopoldina's life in Brazil had turned into a living inferno, far away from he r family, ignored by her husband, the young Brazilian empress slowly fell into deep depressio n. In Vienna, Emperor Franz I openly referred to his Brazilian son-in-law as a scoundrel. Non etheless, Pedro and Leopoldina continued their efforts to produce an heir. The arrival of Pri nce Pedro de Alcantara of Braganza in late 1825, was Leopoldina's crowning satisfaction. Exha usted by constant childbearing since her arrival in Brazil, Empress Leopoldina died practical ly ignored by her husband one year after the birth of the couple's only surviving son.","tree1"

money to buy land and establish a farming operation which supported his

eleven and five years of age, and made provisions for his wife, Grace,

but later moved to Dadenoch in 1300, as recorded by the gre at Kinara

In 1776 the Andereson family was living not far from Havre de Grace,in
the no rtheastern part of Baltimore Co., Maryland. Baltimore had been
part of Hartf ord Co., MD. He grew up on his father's farm. He becamea
millwright and is refered to as such a tradesman in Hartford County
records. He inherited a sm all parcel of land from his mother, as well as
half-interest in his father's farms, and he bought several other tracts
in the general neighborhood. He was a large land-owner, a community
leader, an elected member of the local govern ment unit and a military
officer...
In 1775, Charles Anderson began to sell his land. The Anderson family
moved west in late 1777 or early 1778. When h e left Maryland, his wife
and all eight children accompanied him. No known c hildren were born in
the Monongahela Valley. They moved to Muddy Creek, Cumb erland Township,
Washington Co. (Green Co.), Pennsylvania by September 1778. He lived the
rest of his life there. Muddy Creek is located about a half mi le
northwest of Carmichaels.
Charles and Mary have eight children recorded i n the 1776 Cencus of
Susquehanna Hundred. Oddly, particularly in view of the large acreage he
owned, no slaves are listed. Other nearby families are sho wn as slave
owners. He may not have believed in slavery and refused to have any part
of it.
His will was probated in Green Co. Pennsylvania. It leaves all the land
and almost everything else to his son, William. William's sons, William
and Charles, grand-daughters Drucilla Anderson and Polly Snively are
given small items. His son Charles was given a cross cut saw. The
execut ors for the will were his sons William and James. No other childred
were ment ioned, so six were cut out entirely.

Charles (III) was given one cross-cut saw in his father's will. He

Charles, Margaret and family moved to Tyler Co. (Wetzel County, West Virginia.), West
Virginia about 1825. They lived on Bear Run, Wetzel County, West Virginia, West Virginia.
Charles reco rded two surveys for land which he claimed by right of
settlement in November 1826 and got patents from the Commonwealth in due
course. He and his son-in -law took up and bought the greatest part of
the land on Knob Fork of Fish Cr eek, on Bear Run, Wetzel County, West Virginiawhich flows into Knob

When Elias first saw Margaret, he was a young man about twenty-six years
old. She was a young fifteen years old. The meeting took place at a
church gath ering. Of course, no introduction and no exchange of words.
He just keep lo oking at her, thinking--such a beautiful girl! ""I would
love to have her for my wife."" Sometime later they did meet, and he
learned that her name was Ma rgaret Sole. Since people married young in
those days, a few months of court ship and they were married.
Elias and Margaret set up housekeeping on his fath ers farm on Bear Run,
Wetzel County, West Virginia., West Virginia. Since this was a very large farm, two
brothers (Garrison and Ezra) lived on the same farm.
{The time li ne for this pagagraph might be off since the two children
were born in 1862 a nd 1863. Also, they were married in 1861. Tim
Ashcraft}
THey lived on the farm for a few years. Two children (Sarah and Ezra)
were born there. In th e meantime, Margaret's father died, and her mother
was living with them. Thi s was about the year of 1860 (the days of the
Civil War). Elis was called to report to the Examining Board or whatever
they called it. He reported for t he examination and showed them his knee
(which he had infured with a corn cut ter). He told them, ""Aside from his
knee, God Almighty never made a better m an above the shirt tail.""
Elias had a cousin (Lute Anderson) living out West i n Missouri. He kept
writing and telling Elias about the western country and what a wonderful
place for a young couple to live. So, Elias decided to go W est. He,
Margaret, their two children, and Margaret's mother made the trip in a
wagon pulled by a team of mules. They stayed im Missouri four or five
ye ars. One child, Alcinda Maud, was born there. Margaret's mother
became very homesick for the hills of Wetzel County, West Virginia. so they made the long
trek back.
They settled on the home place (Bear Run) and seven more children were
born. Abou t 1889, since both of his brothers had left, Garrison for
Calhoun Co., West V irginis and Ezra for Roane Co., West Wirginia, Elias
decided to move again. This time they sold the farm. They, along with
their eight youngest children , loaded their possessions onto a wagon and
with a mule team moved from Bead Ruun. They went to New Martinsville and
put their wagon, mules and all on a Boat and went down the Ohio River to
Ravenswood. They bought a farm near Liv erpool, Jackson Co. Elias had a
mill to grind both corn and wheat. He also had a blacksmith shop.
Business was good. Everything was going well, and ev eryone was happy
(especially the younger children).
During the Grover Clev eland Administration ahrd times (a near depression)
hit the country. To amke matters worse Elias had gone on some notes for
his brother, Garrison. Those were the days whena man had to pay his
debts. So Elias lost some money in t he deal. Margaret thought he should
not have signed the notes, to which Elia s replied, ""But Margaret, he was
my brother.""
The family moved again and s ettled near Peniel, Roane Co., West
Virginia. In the late 1800's they moved to Calhoun Co. They stayed for
a year or so at the home of George Lynch, Alt izer. Later they moved to
Jesses Run, ehere they spent their remaining years .
In their last days, Elias and Margaret shared the same love for each
other as in their younger years. She being younger than he, could walk
to visit t he neighbors. In the evening he would sit on the porch
watching for her. Wh en he would see her coming he was like a sixteen
year old with his first love . ""There comes Margaret"", you would hear him
say.
After he passed away, in 1917, she said sadley, ""I was never lonely when
Elias was here with me.""
The y both died at Jesses Run and are buried in the Gibson Cemetery,
Calhoun Co., West Virginia.

She was about 5' 6"". She is buried at Moore Cemetery, Wetzel County, West Virginia., WVA.
She wa s the fourth of ten children. She was a housewife and mother. She
died of h eart failure. She was known to be a good Christian woman. Her
birth date may be the 24 or 25 of September, 1867.
From my dialogue with JH Ashcraft, Tim As hcraft July 1998
My grandmother was probably almost as tall as my grandfather. She was
probably--she was a tall, slender lady. She was probably 5'8"" at l east,
maybe she could have been 5'9"". She was a very religious person. As I
remember when I was a kid growing up, she'd go around the house singing
hy mns most of the time. I don't suppose she knew any other songs. She
liked t o go to church. She liked for the neighbor ladies to come in and
they'd talk about church and going to church. She probably never had a
drink in her lif e. I would seriously doubt that she ever had. She
worked hard. She was a g ood cook. She had many friends. She always
seemed to have a need to visit h er relatives in Roane county when we had
the time to harvest out on the farm. Sometimes we didn't eat too good
when she left to go visit her relatives, b ut I suppose that was one of
her needs that she had. Mary, her daughter-in-l aw, Mary Clark, was very,
very close; of course, Mary living right close ther e was handy for her.
One thing I remember--My Granddad bought Grandmother a horse, probably
this was in the mid-20s, and he bought it from Roy Taylor. H e was a bay
horse with a blaze face, a riding horse. He was a pretty high li ne. My
Grandmother would ride him sidesaddle. It had a sidesaddle. She rid
sidesaddle, and that horse never would get out of a walk if she didn't
wan t it to. It never give her a bit of trouble. Anybody else get on
that horse , he would run off or he would jump if anything--he'd act
scared if a bird fl ew in front of him. When she was on him, there was
never any doubt that that horse would just walk along like an old plow
horse. That was always amazing to us on the farm. She--after my
Granddad and her were divorced, she--I don 't know where she did stay the
first year or two. I think she went to Califo rnia to stay with Harry
or--my Uncle Harry out there a while. She was out th ere when she died.
He had gotten killed before she died. When my Granddad a nd her divorced,
he gave her $10,000, which, in 1930, was a small fortune. S he still had
about--between 7 and 8,000 when she died so she wasn't very--she didn't
spend it very easily. Of course, you could live on $50 a week or $50 a
month at that time, real easy.","tree1"

Catherine of Aragon was a Spanish princess (her badge shows a pomegranate - a symbol from Spa in).
She was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, and was ori ginally married to
Henry's brother Arthur. Henry married Catherine to maintain the alliance with S pain after Arthur died,
leaving Catherine a widow. This marriage was organized by Henry VII a short tim e before he died, but
took place after his death in 1509, when Henry was almost 18 and Catherine wa s 23.
After twenty years of marriage, she had only given birth to one girl, Mary, lat er to become known as Bloody Mary (although she had many miscarriages and still-births in tha t time). As Henry VIII needed a son to provide a male heir to the throne, and as his advisor s deemed Catherine to be past the age of child-birth, Henry tried to persuade her to becom e a Nun. Catherine refused, and after two years of arguments with the Pope, Henry
created a new Archbishop (Thomas Cranmer) who was prepared to declare the marriage
annulled in 1532. Catherine was then banished from the Court and separated from her daughter .
It is said that she died of a broken heart, four years later.

There is speculation that Daniel was born about 1706 and came from Lancashire, England.
""In June of 1720 h e was in jail accused of killing an Indian, son of Wampaneag. Joshua Hempste ad noted in his diary that he had been on the ""jury of inquest upon the body of the Indian which died last night of the wound he received from Daniel Ashc raft on Thursday last on his forehead with a stone."" Daniel was tried in Sep tember. An Indian squaw testified at the trial that she saw Wampaneag's so n load a pistol and threaten to kill
Ashcraft. (This squaw was later whipped by the Indians for informing.)
Shortly after this, Daniel left Conn. In one genealogical account, Daniel went to sea and never returned to Groton. Ind eed there is no further record of him in Conn. In 1726 Daniel was in Wrights town
requesting a land transaction. No evidence exists that he collected a 2 0 pound inheritance from his father in 1732.""
""On the 10th of May, 1732 Dani el was in Wrightstown ( in Bucks County, PA near the Delaware River) selling 220 acres of land to William Allen for 200 pounds lawful money of Pennsylvani a. This act would indicate that
Daniel had been here for several years. Aga in on 14 June 1734 he sold another 120 acres for 160 pounds to William Allen of Philadelphia. This tract was described as containing houses, barns, build ings, gardens,
orchards on Neshaminy Creek adjoining Richard Mitchell and Jonathan Cooper. This attractive sounding piece of land was south of Wrightstow n close to the present day Philadelphia. Again on 24 October 1737 Daniel
A shcraft granted to James Dean 120 acres of land in Wrightstown - this land ha d been purchased from Dennis and Peter Purcell. James Dean sold this same la nd 26 Feb 1742/3 to Ichabod Wilkerson.""
""Daniel witnessed a will of Mary Straw hen of Bethlehem in County of Hunterdon, New Jersey, 7 January 1738, proved 1 0 Septmeber 1740. Dennis Purcell was Mary's son-in-law.""
""Family tradition dictates the Daniel married Elizabeth Lewis, circa 1723, but no evidence of t his marraige has been found, although there is ample proof that he was marrie d to an ""Elizabeth"".""
""We next find evidence of Daniel and his family in the S leepy Creek area of what is now West Virginia. Although this section of the country was not open to settlement until the early 50's, we find some of the Lewis family (i.e. David and Henry) here as early as 1753 and 1756.""
""Daniel 's last land transaction took place in 1755 and between then and 9 October of that year he was killed by Indians. The encounter that he had with the Indi ans was documented by the newspaper.""
""The ""Maryland Gazette"" of Thursday 9 Oc tober 1755 reports, ""Daniel Ashloff (sic) who lived near Town Creek, a few mi les this side of Col. (Thomas) Dresap""s, says that he and his father and othe rs were attacked
by Indians, who killed all but Daniel. Mr Stoddert wanted t o go in pursuit but the others would not. He has applied to Major Prather fo r a detachment of militia. Less than a year later ""The Maryland Gazette""
r eports the death of more family members. ""A letter from Col. Cresap mentions Indians killing Abraham Johnson, Jacob Ashcraft (Mary Johnson's husband), an d James Lowry, a peddlar, Daniel Ashcraft was missing.""
""In 1766, Ephraim and Felix Ashcraft claimed the Sleepy Creek property,as heirs of the widow Ashcr aft. Descriptions of this land indicate that not only Ephraim and Felix live d on the Sleepy Crkk propery but John and
Ichabod as well and within a mile o f each other. The men believed to be the sons of Daniel maintain close relat ionships throughout their lives.""

Tim's live as told James Harry Ashcraft on December 30, 2000
I was born on July 26, 1918 on a Friday in the midst of blackberry season in a house on Pennsylvania Ave, Hundred WVA. The house was located to the left, when facing, of Bell's Market. Dad owned a General Store. He sold the store and went to Bolder, Colorado when I was just a baby. We moved because my Mother had tuberculosis. We stayed in Bolder for 6-8 months but came back to Hundred for Mother to die. She died in the Clark farmhouse on Rocky Run when I was just over 2 years old. I believe I can remember her casket in the back room of the Clark farmhouse. I lived most of my early years with my Granddad and Grandmother Clark and called them Mom and Dad. Six years old lived on farm. Mom and Dad milking in barn. I sat on porch. They told me I was such a big boy. My Uncle Mike was seven years older than me and I never called him Uncle. He was very mischievous. One Sunday when I was about six, he and I were left at the house alone. Mike got some of Dad's wine. He liked to make wine. We went to the the cellar house and I drank some but Mike didn't. It was the first I was drunk.
One day Mike and I were sent up on the hill to get a buck sheep. We left the rope on a fence while picking berries. Mike sent me back to get the rope. I was barefoot and was bitten on the foot by a copperhead snake. Mike carried me back to the farmhouse. Aunt Mary Clark drove me to Littleton to see a doctor. That night my family treated me with wine. My leg was s wollen to twice it's normal size. That same summer, about 1928, I was in the barn when I needed to poop. I had always been told to cleanup if I needed to go in the barn so I took a pitchfork and cleaned up. I then jumped over the gate and onto that same pitchfork, driving it into my foot. I was laid up m ost of the summer.
One nice day before Christmas I came home from school with a side pain. The next day it started snowing. My real father was called in
Moundsville. He sent his doctor to Littleton by train. The doctor rode a horse to the farmhouse and froze his feet. The doctor always
complained to me about his feet which bothered him after they froze. He said it was appendicitis. A horse drawn sled took me to Littleton and the doctor's son drove me to Glendale Hospital. I was then operated on but I was not expected to live. I was in bed for 26 days before moving in with my father for another 26 days. I finally got back to the farm in the spring. My story was in the Moundsville Echo.
Mon left dad after 35 years of marriage. Dad was more fun loving and Mom was more religious. She went to Fairmont. I was given the choice of who I wound stay with. My Dad who liked to cuss, drink and play cards or my Mom who didn't do those things but who did go to church. After long thought I chose Dad. Cora & Anthony were tenant farmers. They would come to the house to cook for us. Cora was my Father's first wife's sister.
I went to a one room school (Hayes School) from 1st through 8th grades. A test was given to see if you could go on to high school. During Dad's last year I missed almost 40 days of school. I would be working on the farm because I was cheap help. At age 13, I came home from school and found Dad dead in a chair in the front room. He had said he wasn't feeling well that morning. Grandmother was still alive.
When my Dad died I went to live with my Mom. She had a Chevy coupe with a rumble seat and I drove her everywhere even though I was only 14 and without a licence.
After a while I went to Moundsville to live with Father and go to school. His third wife divorced him. We lived at the Moore's. I stayed
three years and went to high school.","tree1"

At the age of 14 he went to the oil fields, dressing tools and r unning

stayed at a boarding house where he paid 25 cents for a meal, bed and
washing his c lothes. In addition to a horse and buggy, he owned a one
horse sled for wint er traveling.
In 1907 it took him six days to travel by train to California wh ere he
was the boss of a lease gang for the Monarch Oil Co. Nine months late r
he returned East to manage a general store which he bought at Dean, West
Virginia. The store supplied everything from nails to dry goods to
candy. S ugar came in barrels, candy in buckets, oranges only at
Christmas time and ba nanas only in the Summer. Nails were five cents a
pound, brown sugar at six pounds for 25 cents with Mail Pouch tobacco
costing 25 cents for six packages . Farmers brought turkeys, geese and
chickens to the store at Christmas time and Jolly employed extra help to
dress them for sale. In one section of the store was a Post Office, and
the only compensation from the Post Office Depa rtment was the amount of
the cancelled stamps.
From 1912 to 1920 he bought a nd sold two stores at Burton and Hundred and
then went into business as a con tractor, building houses at Moundsville,

He was named for a Dr. Jolly. Jolly had a heart attack in 1935 with no

From my dialogue wit h JH Ashcraft, Tim Ashcraft July 1998
Of course, I don't know too much about J ames Madison, my Grandfather, but
from the census, he was born in 1842 and th e story in the family was that
he went in to the Civil War at 16. I can't th ink that that's right
because in two or three places in the census in Morgant own, it gives his
birth date as 1842 so if he went in at the start of the Civ il War, he
would have had to have been 19 instead of 16, and I'd rather think that's
what he was; although the picture we have of him looks like he might be
16 years old, doesn't it? He's very, very young. He was in the Civil
W ar until it ended. The story that I hear about him was that he was
captured and was in Andersonville Prison when the war ended. It's
amazing that he got out of there alive because there were 7,000 and some
that didn't. He was am ong the first to have gotten, when the War ended,
turned loose and and told t o go home. That's right outside Atlanta,
Georgia. To walk to Wetzel County, West Virginiaunty or Marion County or Monongalia County,
West Virginia, it would be at least 1, 000 miles and it would seem to me
like that would take a little while to walk there. One story that George
Clark told me and don't know where he got this one unless Dad had told
him sometime, was when he was turned loose at Anders onville, he was
walking up the road with several other soldiers that were dis charged at
the same time and he happened to spot a beef head over at the side of the
road, and he didn't say anything to anybody about it, but he just fel l
out and pretended that he had to stop to rest. They walked on, and he
wa lked back and got that beef head and I guess it had maggots in it, but
he cle aned them out the best he could and cooked it the best he could and
ate it. I guess if you're hungry enough, you'll eat darn near anything.
Those guys o ut of Andersonville I'm sure were pretty hungry. He came
back into Morgantow n and married a woman by the name of Lydia
Stansberry. They had several chil dren which you have a record of. She
died, I don't know what year--I don't r emember what year. You probably
have it down there, but then he married my G randmother who was Robison.
They had three children--Uncle George, my Dad an d Aunt Minnie and I was
told that he was a school teacher, and I wondered abo ut that. Gladyth
told me that when he had gotten out of the Army, he had gon e to, I think
it was West Liberty, and taken a test there at the college for a
teacher's examination, which you could do at that time. He passed it and
was a school teacher. It's hard to believe that anybody with no more
educat ion that he likely had could be a school teacher, but I guess they
did. He d ied at (Knob Forge), and I've wondered why he wasn't buried
with one of his w ives, but I guess if he died at (Knob Forge), taking him
to Bealer Station up where my Grandmother is buried would have been, by
horse and buggy, at least a 2-day trip going up, so probably it was a
matter of convenience to bury hi m at (Little Gap). That's all I know
about the Gentleman.","tree1"

Upon this the Indians moved off and three brothers of John McInt ire
coming to his relief they all pursued the trail of the savages.
""About a mile from Ashcraft's they came upon the body of John McIntire

After a brief fight with the Indians some on the plunder was recovered.

John was the overseer of the will of Richard Peers dated 13 March 1661. Edward Peers named John and his daughter, Peers Ashcroft, in his will. The fact that John Ashcroft named his daughter Peers indicates a close relationship. By some accounts John's wife was Elizabeth Peers.
In the will of John Peers dated 16 March 1688, Elizabeth Ashcraft and her children John, Richard, Edward, Susanna and Elizabeth were mentioned.
Richard Peers son, Edward, wrote his will on 16 April 1665. John Ashcroft and his daughter Peers received legacies equal to the amount left to Edward's sister.
Some records indicate that John Ashcrafte was in New England for brief pereiods as early as 1632.
